DEI COMMISSION MEETING AGENDA
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Commission meetings are being conducted in a hybrid format
with in-person and remote options for attending.

REGULAR MEETING MINUTES
Call to Order
Meeting was called to order at 6:34 pm

MOTION by Commissioner Luo, seconded by Commissioner Mitchell. Motion carries 6-0
Staff Updates
Staff member Kaempfer shared about the upcoming Board and Commissioner Dinner, new and incoming
commissioner Berry, to fill-out and complete form from Tara, and to attend upcoming BAEGV event.
Subcommittee Updates
BAEGV
Commissioner Paradise informed the rest of the commission about the details of the upcoming BAEGV
event on Thursday, May 18th. Commissioner Paradise asked for volunteers to assist in breakout
discussions for this event.

Commissioner Paradise informed the rest of the commission about the various communication avenues
that the commission has used to promote event and the other work of the commission. Commissioner
Hixon asked if we post any of our event via social media platforms and was answered that the City only
uses Facebook to share about the events. Commissioner Hixon made the suggestion that we create
events on Facebook as well as via Eventbrite to get the attention of other community members,
especially younger community members.
Work Plan Discussion
Commissioner Scheie and Chair Allen shared about the updated work plan from the previous meeting, which
incorporated the additions and suggestions made by commissioners. Commissioner Scheie went through
each section of the updated work plan and provided the clarity for the changes made.
Staff Kaempfer asked about the changes to the subcommittee structure recognizing changes to the various
charges. Commissioner Scheie explained that after editing that the changes to the subcommittees were
needed to reflect the approach of the plan. The Commissioners went into full discussion of the plan with
various input made about the breakdown of the plan by quarter.
Chair Allen then instructed the commission to go line by line of the plan starting with the DEIC Charge, then
Proposed 2023 Outputs, and then Work Plan by Quarter. From there edits, were made to reflect
conversation regarding need of specificity to some of the outputs as well as an increased need to have the
commission and their work be a reflection of the broader Golden Valley community.
MOTION by Commissioner Scheie to approve the Commission’s Work Plan, seconded by Commissioner Lou,
Motion carries 6-0
Discussion Items:
Golden Valley Pride
Commissioners discussed whether they should have a table at the Golden Valley Pride , and if they had
room in the budget. It was agreed that they should, and Staff Member Santelices suggested the cost
would be $100 for the table and approximately $400 -$500 for tabling materials.
MOTION was made by Commissioner Scheie to get a table and budget up to $500 total for the event,
seconded by Commissioner Luo, Motion carried 6-0.
Co-Response Model Partnership with PEACE Commission
Staff Kaempfer indicated that because of time that the Commission should table this topic for a future
meeting. The Commission was in agreement.
Sweet Potato Comfort Pie – Kumbayah: The Juneteenth Story Volunteering
Staff Kaempfer informed the Commission that there is an opportunity to participate and/or volunteer
for the event. Chair Allen shared that it would be more beneficial to have commissioners volunteer for
the event recognizing the timing of the event. The Commission was in agreement. Staff Kaempfer
shared that information would be sent over to commissioners via their Golden Valley email.

New Commissioner Recruitment and Representation
Chair Allen shared with the commission and specifically with Council Member Harris that there are
some concerns with the proper representation of commissioners of the DEI Commission related to the
broader Golden Valley Community. Council Member Harris shared that this is of concern for the
Council, especially for the DEI Commission, as well as the rest of the City’s commissions. Council
Member Harris did indicate that although they cannot directly seek about prospective commissioners
based on their social identities, that there can be work done to make it more transparent about the
need for representation for this commission as well as to communicate both more broadly and
specifically to communities that are either underrepresented or not represented on the commission.
Commissioner Luo asked for that in the communication regarding the DEI Commission that it is shared
that part of the responsibility of the DEI Commission is to be representation and have folks from
marginalized backgrounds to be participatory as commissioners.

Due to time constraints, the commission tabled this topic.
