Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Commission meetings are being conducted in a hybrid format
with in-person and remote options for attending.
Remote Attendance Options: Members of the public may attend this meeting by streaming via

REGULAR MEETING MINUTES
Call to Order Meeting was called to order at 6:32pm.
Land Acknowledgement: We acknowledge and honor the Dakota nation, on whose ancestral land the

Approval of June 25 minutes and September 26 agenda
MOTION to edit the agenda by Commissioner Scheie.
MOTION to approve the agenda by Commissioner Paradise, seconded by Commissioner Woodson.

Staff Updates
Staff member Kaempfer informs staff that Council has accepted a resignation from the DEIC,
leaving two open seats. Commissioners should encourage folks they know who might be
interested to apply. Council Member Harris spoke about the application and appointment
process
Staff member Kaempfer talks about the subcommittee structure, commissioners weigh
combining the Events and Communications subcommittees. Commissioner Paradise asks
what City tools are available to the Commission to communicate, i.e. City website and social
media accounts. Staff member Kaempfer explains the process for submitting items to
Communications for posting.
Staff member Kaempfer reminds commissioners that the meeting on October 24th is a joint
meeting with the Environmental Commission and will include a presentation by Hennepin
Historical Museum representative Crystal Boyd on HaHa Wakpadan.MOTION by
Commissioner Allen to hold the October 24 DEIC from 6:00 – 7:30 PM with the joint
meeting beginning at 7:30 PM, seconded by Commissioner Chester. Motion carries 8-0

Staff member Kaempfer asks the commissioners if they would like to move their December
26th meeting to December 19th. MOTION by Commissioner Paradise, Seconded by
Commissioner Kannenberg. Motion carries 8-0.
Subcommittee Updates
City Systems
The subcommittee has been working on a progress report on implementation of the
City’s Equity Action Plan. Commissioner Scheie hopes to send the draft report to Council
in October for their review.
Staff member Kaempfer provides an update on recent changes to the report. Staff
member Kaempfer also updates the commissioners on the Employee Equity Survey
including the information that the survey results overlap with the needs in the Equity
Action Plan.
Commissioner Scheie informs the commission that Council has accepted most of the
commission’s recommendations for the Public Asset Naming Policy.
Communications and Networking
Commissioner Chester suggests the Cultural Calendar is mostly complete but may be
missing two dates. Staff member Kaempfer shows the commission what the calendar
could eventually look like.
Discussion Items
Commissioner Scheie talks about a possible 2024 Building an Equitable Golden Valley forum
topic of school curriculum to be proactive about informing the community of the
importance of an inclusive curriculum. Suggests education surrounding HaHa Wakpadan as
well.
Commissioner Allen suggests keeping in mind that a communication strategy should be
created during the October meeting for Bill Hobbs and MLK Day awards. Commissioner
Jones mentions they have reached out to the schools to advertise the MLK award.
