We acknowledge and honor the Dakota nation, on whose ancestral land the City of Golden Valley is built, and
whose land resources we use. We commit to counteracting the erasure of the cultural practices and presence
of the Dakota people through education and by amplifying a wide range of indigenous voices.

REGULAR MEETING MINUTES
1. Call to Order
The meeting was called to order at 6:30 pm by Chair Weiswerda.
2. Roll Call
Commissioners in person: Roger Bergman, John Cornelius, Bill Delaney, Matthew Olson,
Matthew Sanders, Scott Seys, Dawn Speltz, and Linden Weiswerda,
and Brian Wright
Staff present: Janelle Crossfield, Parks and Recreation Director; Greg Simmons,
Recreation and Facilities Supervisor; Mike Ward, Golf Maintenance
Manager; and Sheila Van Sloun, Administrative Assistant
3. Land Acknowledgment Statement
Chair Weiswerda shared the Land Acknowledgment Statement with the commission.
4. Agenda Changes or Additions

5. Approval of Minutes – October 23, 2023
MOTION moved by Commissioner Sandersand seconded by Commissioner Bergman to
approve the October 23, 2023 meeting minutes. Motion carried unanimously.
6. Tree Planting Plan for Brookview Golf Course Western Border – Mike Ward
Staff member Ward said four tofive Princeton elms will be planted on the western side of the
golf course where highly infested ash trees were removed. He also said that over the years,
they have gotten down to 300 ash trees on the golf course from 390.
7. Review and Recommend to Approve Recognized Golden Valley Youth Athletic Associations
for 2024 – Greg Simmons
Staff member Simmons is the staff liaison to the Youth Athletic Associations. He maintains their
bylaws and communication to assure they are in good standing with the city.
The following are considered recognized Youth Athletic Associations in Golden Valley:
Golden Valley Little League, Golden Valley Girls’ Softball, Park Valley United FC, Armstrong-
Cooper Youth Baseball, Armstrong-Cooper Youth Hockey, Hopkins Youth Hockey, Cooper-
Armstrong Girls’ Fast Pitch, Armstrong-Cooper Youth Lacrosse, and Hopkins Girls Basketball.

February 26, 2024 – 6:30 pm
Simmons said a representative from Hopkins Youth Baseballreached out to him about being
added to this list. He also shared that their organization would compete with Golden Valley
Little League. Commissioner Sanders asked if GVLL was aware of the request and asked for an
explanation for a new competing organization. Simmons suggested the topic be added to a
future agenda for further discussion.
MOTION moved by Commissioner Speltz and seconded by Commissioner Wright to
approve the recognized Youth Athletic Associations. Motion carried unanimously.
8. 2024 Park Project Update
Staff member Crossfield shared a briefupdate on the 2024 park projects and answered questions.
Discussion then turned to Brookview tennis courtupdates with commissioners recommending the
eastern courts remain painted and striped for tennis and renovating the western courts for
pickleball as planned.
Crossfield talked about park shelter renovations stating Scheid Park shelter was next.
Commissioners expressed their desire to have the park shelter renovations continue moving
forward. After discussion, the following motion was made:
MOTION moved by Commissioner Speltz and seconded by Commissioner Cornelius to
recommend following the Wesley Park shelter design for Scheid Park, pending
recommendations from city staff.Motion carried unanimously.
9. Commission and Staff Planning Updates
a.Commissioner updates – Commissioners discussed theturkey and coyotepopulation. Mike
Ward said the city works with the USDA for removal.
b. Recreation Supervisor position update – Staff member Crossfield said first round interviews
took place last week, with second rounds happening this week.
c. Minnesota Bound update – Staff member Crossfield said Brookview Golf Course was
recently featured in an episode of Minnesota Bound. Assistant Golf Course Manager, Brett
Johnson, and Turf Maintenance Assistant, Brian Haley are featured in the episode.
d. Winter Disc Golf baskets removed February 12 – Staff member Crossfield said winter disc
golf baskets were removed for the season on Monday, February 12.
e. Ice Bowl Disc Golf Tournament and Contribution to the Noah Joynes Youth Recreation
Fund – Staff member Crossfield said a $1,000 contribution was made to the NJYRF from the
Ice Bowl Disc Golf Tournament.
f. Curling season concludes March 14 – Staff member Crossfield said the curling season
concludes on Thursday, March 14.
g. Next OSRC meeting is scheduled for Monday, March 25, 6:30 pm at Brookview – Staff
member Crossfield shared the next scheduled OSRC meeting information.
