Center for Economic Inclusion –City Follow-Up Meeting Staff Kaempfer shared that city staff will be meeting with staff of Center for Economic Inclusion during the month of March to obtain resources from the Center and ask questions. Staff Kaempfer also shared they will be asking the Center possibly present for City Council about the results but will have to wait till the meeting to confirm that step. 6.B. Equity Plan Timeline 3 City of Golden Valley DEI Commission Meeting February 20, 2024 — 6:30 PM Staff Kaempfer shared that the timeline to present the Equity Plan to council has been bumped to accommodate for the search process of the Interim City Manager. The Equity Plan would then be presented during City Council Work Session on April 10 th and be on the agenda for City Council April 16th. 6.C. Ho-Chunk History Event Co-Sponsorship Staff Kaempfer shared no specific update has been provided but encouraged Commissioners to share out in their informal networks about the event. Staff Kaempfer will then send any updates about the location, time, and additional information via email. 4 City of Golden Valley DEI Commission Meeting February 20, 2024 — 6:30 PM Subcommittee Updates 7.A. City Systems Commission Scheie met with one another to schedule and hold a mid-year event regarding the results of the CEI REDI, specifically using the June BAEGV date as the mid-year event. Council Member Harris is also interested in the perspective and approach for this kind of event. For the event, Commissioner Paradise shared that Commissioner Allen would also facilitate the event and panel with staff members present such as HR director, Community Development director, and Public Works director. Commissioner Paradise provided a reminder that they need to submit a communication and event template to Staff Kaempfer. 7.B. Communication and Networking Commissioner Paradise has already started promoting and sending out reminders for the upcoming March BAEGV. Commissioner Paradise asked when the flyer would be completed, and Staff Kaempfer informed that the flyer should be completed by Friday. Commissioner Paradise shared that the subcommittee met and worked on their piece of the Commissions work plan. Staff Kaempfer provided an update to the commission about updates from his meeting with the Communication Department, which included the purpose of the Commissions webpage, what elements could and could not be edited, editable elements would be done in due time, and where Commissioner created documents will be located. Commissioner Kannenberg and Commissioner Paradise shared frustrations about what could not be edited and ideally would like it to be more than just a page where dates and times are located as well as make it more user-friendly. Commissioner Kannenberg asked to see if the Communication Department could update the photos on the page to include more and if the image header could be something relevant to the DEIC. 1. State of the City Commissioner Paradise shared the she would like for the DEIC to be present and participatory in the State of the City. Commissioner Scheie volunteered Commissioner Thoresen to speak on behalf of the DEIC as they are the chair and come at it with one voice. 7.C. Events 1. BAEGV Forum: a. March 2024: Women Leading the Way – Final Details Commissioner Allen shared that the Subcommittee has a standing meeting on Saturday mornings at 9:00am and is looking forward to the upcoming BAEGV. Commissioner Jones and Kannenberg have been putting together a quiz for BAEGV participants to do. Commissioner Allen shared they are in communication with Nong’s Thai Cuisine to do catering for the event as well as have 17 nominees but still need to put communication out through social to obtain more nominations and show up on the day of the event. Commissioner Allen and Paradise has to increase the budget for each event recognizing the increase in cost for catering. Commissioner Scheie stated 5 City of Golden Valley DEI Commission Meeting February 20, 2024 — 6:30 PM that they will revisit the budget conversation for events during the budget and work plan planning conversation. Commissioner Allen suggested that all BAEGV Forums be consistent and located in the same place unless the event is partners with another organization. Commissioner Allen suggested that all future BAEGV be held at Brookview and Staff Kaempfer stated that he can do the booking for that. b. June 2024 – Needed Initial Steps See notes in City Systems Updates 2. Mid-April Event: Listening Session on Anti-Semitism and Islamophobia Commissioner Allen shared that the subcommittee is looking to do an event that engages at this topic of antisemitism and islamophobia because it is of current concern across the community. The event would be a partnership with either the JRC or JCC and an organization that can talk about the current issues related to islamophobia. Commissioner Scheie asked if there was enough bandwidth within the subcommittee to make the event happen and Commissioner Allen said that they will be able to do it. Commissioner Paradise shared they are looking at April 11th for the event. Commissioner Scheie asked for any updates to be provided in the March DEIC meeting for how other commissioners can support. 8.Discussion Items 8.A. 2024 DEIC Priorities 1. Subcommittee Draft Workplans and Budgetary Needs Commissioner Scheie shared the Communication and Networking Subcommittee has provided their draft workplan. Commissioner Paradise provided an overview of the subcommittee’s workplan and what they are looking to achieve in collaboration with the Communication Department. Commissioner Allen shared that within the Event Subcommittee’s work plan needs to continue to include events with partner commissions such as the Environmental Commission while also maintaining some of the similar objectives from the previous workplan as it’s important to maintain those efforts instead of changing form year to year. Commissioner Allen reminded the commission that one of the events that has been in continued conversation but has yet to come to realization is a large culminating cultural celebration event. Commissioner Allen indicated that this should be both present in the upcoming work plan and that event planning for it should begin soon. Commissioner Scheie noted that this event could also highlight specific businesses within the area, even outside of Golden Valley, that are culturally specific in addition to what typically takes place at similar cultural celebration events. Commissioner Allen indicated that planning needs to occur first before figuring out any nomination process for businesses to be participatory and that budgetary cost, inclusive of potential sponsorships, needs to be organized before anything begins. 6 City of Golden Valley DEI Commission Meeting February 20, 2024 — 6:30 PM Commissioner Allen asked about adjusting the budget for future events to accommodate for the increase in general cost of catering and suggested that looking at different time of day to accommodate if budget cannot be increased, which includes doing it on a weekend day, doing breakfast, or not doing it during a typical mealtime. Commissioner Kannenberg noted that the cost for events and all that’s typically included from year to year that a budget between $2,100 and $2,900 would be appropriate. Staff Kaempfer reminded the commission that their total budget for the year is $5,300. Commissioner Allen noted that the commission roughly spends between $400 to $500 per event and with four BAEGV forums comes to a total between $1,600 to $2,000 but could increase if needed. Staff Kaempfer reminded the commission that their work plan is usually finalized and presented to Council at a work session at the end of April or beginning of May for adoption at the beginning of May or end of May. Commissioner Scheie will be drafting the upcoming work plan and provide updates at the March DEIC meeting. 9.Adjournment Meeting adjourned at 7:59pm _______________________________ Seth Kaempfer, Equity and Inclusion Manager _______________________________ Date _______________________________ Lee Thoresen, Chair _______________________________ Date 7
