Call to Order Meeting called to order at 6:33pm 1.A. Commissioner Onboarding and Oath of Office Commissioner Briggs and Tipping were sworn into their roles as Commissioners of the DEI Commission. Staff Kaempfer provided an onboarding presentation. 2. Land Acknowledgement 3. Roll Call Commissioners present: Ruth Paradise, Tracy Murphy, Andrew Alberth, Kristian Baker, Kira Jimenez, Madasen Briggs, and Bill Tipping Commissioners absent: Joelle Allen Staff present: Seth Kaempfer, Equity and Inclusion Manager , and Arantxa Chair-Kobb, Community Connections Specialist 4. Approval of Agenda Motion to approve agenda by Commissioner Alberth, seconded by Commissioner Murphy. Motion carries 7-0 5. Approval of Minutes Motion to approve minutes by Commissioner Murphy, seconded by Commissioner Alberth. Motion carries 7-0 6. Discussion Items 6.A. Bylaws Update Commission worked at updating Article 3, 4, and 5 of the bylaws of the commission. Commission created more clarifying language in meeting and attendance, and removed and simplified language in rules. 3 2 Commission asked Staff Kaempfer to submit the updated bylaws to the City’s Legal Review. 7. Subcommittee Updates 8.A. City Systems Commissioner Alberth shared that they will be reviewing protocols and ordinances of the Community Development Department through an equity lens. Commissioner Alberth will be scheduling the next meeting. 8.B. Communication and Networking 1. GV Pride Tabling Commission Ruth asked for Commissioners to sign-up for the GV Pride Tabling and provided an overview of what volunteers will be doing at the table. Commission discussed an activity for those coming up table to do to learn about what makes community proud of living in Golden Valley and agreed to doing it. 2. Questionnaire/Survey Outreach Commissioners discussed the submitted survey and asked that it get updated and sent to the Communications Department for future city-wide surveys. 8.C. Events 1. BAEGV 1. May 2025 Forum Follow-Up Commissioner Paradise provided an update about the forum as well as discussed how attendees went and how engaging a film was in comparison to a typical panel format for the forums. 2. September 2025 Commission discussed that the topic of the September forum will be about the exceptional neighbors with sharing out about the nominees as well as doing a roundtable discussion on what creates a welcoming and inclusive neighborhood. Commissioner Paradise noted that the nominations should be focused on those that “go the extra mile”, always there for one another, and assist one another. Commission has tried to work with the City’s PEACE Commission to be a collaborator on the forum, but feel like it would be better if they were in attendance although the intent of the forum aligns with the PEACE Commisso’s bylaws and mission. 4 3 Commissioner Paradise shared that she submitted communication information for the event in collaboration with Commissioner Jimenez. . 2. Hate Has No Home Here Forum Commissioner discussed that they will be moving the event to October 16th and the focus will be on immigration. Commissioner Tipping indicated interest in assisting to plan the forum as well as shared that community, both overall and specifically those experiencing immigration issues, are looking for specific information regarding immigration, want assurance, and know how to engage when it feels like a moving target. 3. Robbinsdale HRC Event Partnership Commissioner Alberth provided an update about the City of Robbinsdale Human Rights Commission (HRC) Event regarding Obergefell v Hodges. The Robbinsdale HRC asked if the DEIC would like to co-sponsor and advertise the event. The Commission was in support of this ask. Motion to approve co-sponsorship and advertising of the Robbinsdale HRC event by Commissioner Alberth, seconded by Commissioner Briggs. Motion carries 7-0 8. Staff Updates 8.A. Equity Plan Council Work Session Presentation Staff Kaempfer shared with the Commission that he would be presenting an annual update regarding the City’s Equity Plan to the Commission at their June Work Session. Chair Paradise asked that Commissioner attend the Work Session in support of the Equity Plan. 9. Future Agenda Items Commissioners asked for the following to be put on the agenda for the March meeting: • Bylaws Updates • Hate Has No Home Here • Chair and Vice Chair Elections • Robbinsdale Event Updates 10.
