MEMORANDUM
Date:
September 7, 1995
To:
Golden Valley Planning Commission
From:
Beth Knoblauch, City Planner
Subject:
September Meetings
Since we will not be meeting on September 11, I am forwarding information from
Don Anderson, of the Golden Valley Historical Society, about the upcoming
presentation by John Borchert. Don has thoughtfully provided the current issue of
the Society's newsletter, which coincidentally happens to have a membership/dues
application on the back. He says, though, that there will be no charge for planning
commissioners who simply want to sit in on the Borchert presentation. The only
thing is, Don doesn't always have a good sense of the attendance level that a
particular meeting will generate; they've had a couple of standing room only
sessions.
e
Don't forget the special meeting of the planning commission on Tuesday,
September 26. There will be a CUP application on for informal public hearing that
night, so a quorum is necessary. Also, under "Other Business" there will be a site
sketch review for a proposed townhouse development at the southeast corner of
Douglas Drive and Highway 55 (portion of Minnegasco property). The applicant
would be Dick Curry.

and resource development.

THANKS TO: NANCY PIAZZA who has loaned to the society some of her items received when
she was Golden Valley Lilac Time queen in 1967. The photos and trophy will be placed
on display with other Lilac Festival items at the Golden Valley City Hall.
MANY MANY THANKS: To Chris Costigan for her generous donation of time served as a
director of the Golden Valley Historical Society. She has chosen not to continue on
the board. She has been involved with the society since it began. Her knowledge of
Golden Valley comes from her personal involvement over many' years. The directors
expressed their appreciation to her at the August board meeting.
THE ORAL HISTORY PROJECT was given a slight turn by- the society directors at the last
meeting. After attending a seminar by the Minnesota. Historical Society on oral history,
it was discussed at great length and decided by the directors that instead of investing
in a camcorder at this time, a quality tape recorder and quality microphones should be
purchased for the committee to use. .
Previously, .the directors favored purchasing a camcorder for the project. The
Historical Society seminar pointed out that verbai recordings done properly were much more
important for future reference than visual record of the history subject. Due to the
limited financial resources of the Golden Valley Historical Society.the board felt it
was best to pursue the tape audio direction.
The next step in the oral history project is to narrow down to specific subject
area and then concentrate on what information should be collected about it and from
whom to ask to elaborate about it. To pursue this avenue, president'Judy Mustard
will be appointing a committee to receive, review and recommend to the directors on
a specific topic for the 1995-96 season.

WHERE DID THOSE NAMES COME FROM? (Reprinted from Western Hennepin County Pioneers
Association, Newsletter #101) Have you ever wondered about the origin of the names of
Minnesota Counties? Some names are quite obvious, like: Hennepin - Father Louis
Hennepin, missionary and explorer. Ramsey - Alexander Ramsey. first governor of ~
Minnesota. Carver - Captain Johnathon Carver, explorer. ~
But what about all those French, Indian and even Latin names;.where did they
come from and what do they mean? Here are a few of the more unusual ones and their
origins:
Anoka - an Indian word meaning "on both sides of the river"
BigCStone - translation of Indian name alluding to the local outcropping of granite
Blue Earth - named for an earth used by the Sisseton tribe as a paint
Chisago - Chippewa for large and lovely
Itasca"- portions of the Latin words Veritas Caput. meaning true head (of the Mississi-
ppi River)
Lac qui Parle - French for "Lake That Talks"; Mahnomen - Ojibway term meaning "wild rice"
Mille Lacs - French for "Thousand Lakes".
