Minutes of the Golden Valley
Ptanning Commission
May 19, 1980
' A regular meeting of the Planning Commission was held at 7:30 p.m. on May 19,
1g80, in the Gold Room at the Civic Center, 7800 Golden Valley Road, Golden
Va11ey, Minnesota.
Chairperson Eastes called the meeting to order at 7:30 pm.
Those present were Commissioners: Eastes, Hughes , Thompson, Forster, Edstrom,
and Polachek. Also present was Martin Farrell , Assistant City Planner.
Commissior►ers Specktor, Levy and Sehlin were absent.
1 . Approval of the Minutes - May 12, 1980.
It was moved by Hughes , seconded by Edstrom and carried unanimously to approve
the May 12, 1980 Planning Commission Minutes.
II . Report on the HRA Meetin� - May 13L 1980.
Dave Thompson represented the Planning Commission at the HRA meeting held May 13,
1980. Commissioner Thompson then briefed the Commission on the decisions made
at the HRA meeting and informed the Commission that a new Valley Square Commission
has been formed by the HRA. Commissioners Thompson and Edstrom were appointed by
the HRA to the new Va11ey SqUare Commission.
III . Resetting the Informal Public Hearing Date - Rezoning
APPLICANT: Bury � Carlson, lnc.
LOCATION: 6008 Wayzata Blvd.
REQUEST: Change zoning from "Open Development" to "Industrial"
Martin Farrell explained the following reasons for resetting the Informal Public
Heari ng:
1 . Staff is waiting for a landscaping report from the City Forester
2. The Minnesota Poltution Control Agency's Operation Permit has
become outdate.
Jim Bury, the proponent, entertained questions from the Commission regarding the
rezoning request.
It was then moved by Thompson, seconded by Polachek and carried unanimously to
reset the Informal Public Hearing date to June 9, 1980.
IV. lnformal Public Hearing - Rezoning
APPLICANT: City of Golden Valley
LOCATION; South of the Chicago-Northwestern Railroad Tracks, jus;t
east of County Road 18 and north of lOth Avenue North.
REQUEST: Change zoning from `'Light tndustrial" to "Institutional (1-�t)"
Martin Farrell explained the staff report and tfie reasons for the request. He
then recommended approval of the rezoning.
Lowell Odland, City Engineer, then addressed the Commission and explained the
types of uses that the Department of Public Works would have on the site.

Bob Nelson, Manager of Piltsbury, was present at the meeting and stated that he
had no problem with the rezoning request.
It was moved by Edstrom, seconded by Polachek, and carried unanimously to recommend
approval of the rezoning from "Light Industriat" to "Institutional (I-4)", ,�nd
requested that any area that will be excavated be properly screened and fenced.
V. Preliminary Plat Review - (Valley Square)
APPLICANT: City of Golden Valley
LOCATION: Rhode Island Avenue from Golden Vatley Road to 10th
Avenue North
REQUEST: Approval of Preliminary Plat
Martin Farretl summarized the staff report and recommended approval of the pre-
liminary plat.
After some discussion,, it was then moved by Hughes, seconded by Thompson, and
carried unanimously to approve the pretiminary plat.
Chairperson Eastes set up and made appointments to the foltowing subcommittees :

Commissioner Hughes had priorly been appointed as an alternate to the BZA end
attended the May 13, 1980 BZA Meeting. Ne then summarized the BZA Meeting.
The meeting adjourned at 8:30 p.m.
