Summary
Golden Valley's 20th annual Views of the Valley photo contest drew 64 entries from residents
who tried to capture on film their version of the city's beauty, uniqueness, and quality of life. The
"Natural Golden Valley" category featured photos of landscapes, flora, fauna, etc. T.he "Golden
Valley Lifestyle" eategory featured photos of cityscapes, buildings, people, and activities. The
"Enhanced" category featured photos significantly altered by editing software.
Following these standards as well as the basics of good photography, four judges chose the
following entries as winners. All winners receive certificates of recognition and publication of
their photos in various City public information pieces. Top winners in each category also receive a
cash prize.
Enhanced Golden Valley
• Honorable Mention: "Golden Valley Pops," a fireworks shot, by McKenna Karpan.
• Honorable Mention: "Playful Dismount," a shot of a young girl stepping off of playground
equipment, by Kalin Kauppila. This is Mr Kauppila's seventh win. He previously won a second
place in 2007 and a third in 2008, People's Choice in both 2009 and 2Q10, and honorable
mentions in 2Q10 and 2011.
• First Place ($50): "Nature's Mosaic," an up-close study of a dragonfly wing, by Amy Sands.
Golden Vafley lifestyle
• Honorable Mention: "Stepping Stones, "a black-and-white shot of a young girl walking along a
flagstone path, by Amy Sands.
