2-15-19611 inutes of the Regulareetirlg PARK AND RECPEATION CO1.12.1ISSI^'T OF Village of Golden Valley February 15, 1961 7:10 The Park and Recreation Commission of the Village of Golden Valley met at its regular monthly meeting at the Village Hall, Wednesday, February 15, at 7:10 P.Y. Present were Byrnes, Petersen, Ewald, Scheffler, Sullivan, Ulstad, Reed and Sullivan. The minutes of the previous meeting were approved. t O _S PROPERTY: The Commission and 1.1r. Ulstad held a general discussion on thel0.18 acres of land located to the north and west of Seeman Park. Mr. Ulstad stated that the Village owns 20 lots near this property which could. be applied to the Jones Property. He further stated that, though it is difficult to do, we ?night persuade the Tax Commission to allow us to sell a portion of the unusable 20 h�// for park purposes. lots ".r. Ulstad excusod hi.rself from the meeting, and stated he would be back in an hour. Mr. Sullivan gave the Commission a very {food description of the Jor_es Property. He stated that the land is low and will need fill. The next 20 years' assess- ments, including sewer and lateral, if paid immediately, will amount to x"11,976.89. The 1958 back taxes amount to ?'1656.93, and the 1959 back taxes amount to X1617.91. There is, also, $410.08 owed in interest on the taxes. Our purchase price would, also, include whatever amount 1,:r. Jones would sell, this property. At one time ;ir. Jones stated he would sell for }5000, but we may be able to negotiate with him for less. Yr. Sullivan made a :notion that we recommend that Mr. Ulstad immediately proceed with the best set of negotiations he can make with Fred Jones toward the purchase of this property. The motion was seconded. The Commission held a general discussion with regard to how this purchase would affect this year's budget and the budgets of future years. Dr. Petersen and Mr. Green requested that the motion be tabled until Mr. Ulstad returns to the meeting. The motion was tabled. LIONS CLUB, Hockey Equipment: The Lions Club has agreed to pay the bill in the amount of „150.00 for two complete sets of goalee equipment. The Commission will write a thank you letter to ?,r. Ken Sanders, and will, also, publically thank the Lions Club through the Sugurban Press. SKATING: The Corlifiission held a general discussion on the size of this year's rinks, hockey and general skating areas, and the closing of all areas. It was-enerally agreed that March 1 would be a suitable close -off date for all areas. For the benefit of the Recreation Hockey Program, 1r. Reed will advise Mr. Denzin to continue flooding the hockey areas for two more weeks. Mr. Sullivan stated that the lights at the skating area at the Colden Valley High School should be re -spaced. Mr. Reed will notify the proper person. RECREATION REPORT: ,'r. Reed advised that 4:1r. Brenna arrived in Minneapolis to- day, and will become our Recreation Director on March 1. r. Reed invited the Commission to have lunch with Pr. Brenna at the University on February 23. Ten people have been hired for next summer. The Commission held a general dis- cussion on Mr. Brenna's responsibilities. All members feel he should meet with civic groups, PTA's, etc. just as soon as possible. The Commission would like him to outline his working program, and have it ready for the March meeting. Yr. Reed will so advise him. The Commission discussed publicity with regard to the hiring of Mr. Brenna. This matter was tabled for Mr. Ulstad's return. February 152 1961, I+Ilnutes Continued CARL SANDBFRC SCHOOL: Mr. Sullivan advised that I.�r. Smith will be out of town until sometime in Tlarch. As soon as he returns, ::r. Sullivan will call him for an unoffici^' meeting to discuss such things as lights, and the amount of money we are requested to ray for use of this school for Saturday recreation activities during the winter, The matter will be tabled until our next meeting at which time the Commission will decide when it would like to meet officially - with the School Board. .1r. Ulstad returned to the meeting. 77ICIAL NAIMM OF PARIS: The Commission held a general discussion. It was decided there would be many advantages if we mave all areas definite names, and that the names and locations should be published in the Suburban Press. Schied Park The Commission was as'ced to consider these and other names during the month, and this matter will, again, be brought up at our next meeting. Yr. Ewald asked if we had secured the General Hills Property, and was advised by Itlr. . Ulstad _that we have not. JONES PROPERTY CONTINUED: Mr. Ulstad wa.s brought up to date on the discussion of this property held at the beginning of the meeting, and was told of the motion that was made and seconded, but not carried. The Commission and Mr. Ulstad held a general discussion. The motion which reads "Ke recommend that Roger Ulstad imrediately proceed with the best set of negotiations he can make vri th Fred Jones toward the purchase of this property" was carried. RECREATION REPORT CONTINUED: The Commission asked Mr. Ulstad for his recom- mendation on how it should publicize Mr. Brenna. 'Mr. Ulstad advised that I/Ir. Brenna ti i ll be mentioned in the February 16 Village Nevis Letter. Mr. Ulstad said he would like to wait until after Tdarch 1 to release this news to the papers. Tjir. Reed invited Tilt-. Ulstad to attend the luncheon for Mir. Brenna, and !air. Ulstad will see that T:Ir. Brenna receives a copy of the 1961 Recreation Budget at the luncheon. 1.1ISCELIANEOUS, !,irs. Scheffler advised the Commission of two broken or cut canvas swings at Papoose Park. The Commission held a general discussion on the storage of equipment during the winter months. .Ir. Byrnes requested that each Commission member be furnished with the 1960 Park Financial Report. 'Mr. Ulstad will furnish this report. Yr. Brynes requested a 1961 quarterly Park Financial Report. 11r. Ulstad stated that after 'Ir. Brenna takes over his Recreation duties he will discuss expenses thoroughly with him.
