PARK AND RECREATION GOMMISSION OF
VILLAGE OF GOLDEN VALLEY
July 27, 1961 7:00 P.M.
The Park and Recreation Commission of the Village of Gcnlden Valley, met at
its regular monthly meeting at the Village Hall, Thursday, July 27, 1961, at
7:00 P.M. Board members present: Mr. John Byrnes, Chairman, Dr. Ray Petersen,
Mr. Graydon Ewald, Mrs. Laura Scheffler, Mr. John H. Sullivan and Mr. Max Green.
Board members absent: Mr. Ray Stockman. Also present: Miss Patricia Lynch,
Secretary, Mr. John Brenna, Director and Park Supervisors: Mrs. Mabel Pearson,
Mrs. Virginia Riddiford, Mr. John Adams, Mr. Hobert Lockwood and Mr. David Dube.
Chairman Byrnes brought forth the June 29, 1961 minutes. The minutes were approved
as written.
At thei time Mr. Byrnes brought the Payroll and Bills for July, 1961. A Payroll
of $6,179.00 and Bills amounting to $649.45 totaling $6,828.45 were accepted.
Mr. Byrnes asked that a breakdown of the status of the Bond Fund be brought to the next
meet-ing.
TNTRODUCTION OF PLAYGROUND SUPERVTSORS: At this tiire Mr. John Brenna introduced the
ark and Recreation Supervisors to the members of the Board. Mr. Byrnes,
speaking for the Park and Recreation Commission, complimented them on a fine
Sumner Program. Thereafter, followed a brief intermission of the meeting for
a discussion of the Summer Program.
NF.7 BUSTNT7,9S: 1962 Budget At this time Mr. Brenna brought forth the Proposed
1962 Park and Recreation udget. Mr. Brenna explained the Department shall
receive 3.5 mills from the Village and an added $2,7'?O.0') from fees and charges.
With our now assessed evaluation of $15,000,000.00 and each mill accruing
$15,000.00, 3.5 mills represents $52,500.00 with the added fees and charges
our total figure will be $55,200.")0.
Mr. Brenna explained the Budget breakdown briefly by item. Mr. Byrnes complimented
the Budget make-up and all members were infull accordance with the new Budget,
except for one item, that being the special assessments. After a great deal of
discussion, lfir. John H. Sullivan and Mr. John Byrnes agreed to meet with Mr. Brenna
and Mr. Ulstad to see if some solution might be resolved.
PARK DFVFLOPMT�,NT: Mr. Brenna explained that the shelter for Papoose Park is in
and painted. Also, the sun shelter at the Golden Valley High School. Tennis Courts
was in and completed, plus the shelter at Golden Oaks Park was repainted. The
AIL -Purpose Shelter scheduled for Lillian Seeman Park as of this date has not
arrived.
WOODLAWN PARK: This park area located at Lowry Terrace and Regent Avenue
has been leveled. Next week, the area will be graded for
drainage and a heavier type fill will be brought in to
stabilize the soil condition. The area is scheduled to
be seeded this fall.
NATCHEZ PARK: Next Saturday, if not hampered by rain, the village will
a:-ain cc-~itinue filling the area with a heavy type fill.
Atstock oile of ton soil will be placed on the park left
over frcm the above nebtuibed project. In turn, this
area will also be scheduled for seed ; ng this fall.
LIONS CLUB PARK:The Village has cut a ditch 300 feet long running along
the west side of the park, whereby, elimina+,ing three
swampy, pot -holed areas. Within this 300 font ditch a
24 inch concrete culvert will be placed. In turn this
will add approximately three addit;onal usable areas to
the park.
STJMMFR PROGRAM: At this time Mr. Brenna brought forth a quick recap of the
remaining two weeks of the 1961 Summer Program. The 7th week being next week,
will be our "Camp for a Day" week, whereby, each playground will travel to Lake
Independence for a day of outdoor fun. The eighth and last week will be devoted to
playground tournaments and ending with the Junior Olympics and a Watermelon Bust for
all.
There being no further business, Dr. Ray Petersen moved the meeting be adjourned.
Mrs. Laura Scheffler seconded the motion. Meeting adjourned at 9:25 P.M.
