PARK AND RECREATION COPJIIISSION OF
Village of Golden Valley
November 30, 1961 7:25 P.M.
The regular meeting of the Golden Valley Park Commission was held at the
Village Hall, Thursday, November 30, 1961 at 7:25 P.M. Board Members present:
Dr. Ray G. Petersen, John Byrnes, Chairman, John H. Sullivan, Mrs. Laura Scheffler,
and Max Green. Also present: John Brenna, Director and Patricia Lynch, Secretary.
The minutes were approved as read.
N3i B US INESS :
I. Terms EXPRIE: It was the consensus of those present that Mr.
John Byrnes, Chairman contact Mr. Graydon Ewald to see if he desired to serve
another term on the Bark and Recreation Commission, if so, Mr, Jo) -m Brenna
was instructed to send a memo recommending that both Mr. John H. Sullivan and
Mr. Graydon Ewald be appointed for another term.
II. SWI1R,1ING POOL REPORT: A second committee on the swimming pool
has been selected for study into the question of an indoor pool. They are:
John L. Brenna, Vic Snyder, Paul Enghauser, Art Flannagan, John Byrnes and
George Pennock. The possibility of a pool in the Middle School to be constructed
is the question.
IIIA CURRENT PROGRAM: Mr. Brenna explained that the Newsletter
gave everything to date on the program. The swimming program is going quite well -
plans for an hour extra for the swim team in place of separate swim instruction
classes on Thursday evening. Synchronized has a large class, there is another
hour which could be utilized as a family swim night. Teen Dances has about
250-300 youngsters attending. May work it tD about two nights a month. The
next dance is the 15th of December. 1',asketball begins Saturday, December 2,
1961. The instructors are Charles Mencel, Whitey Johnson, Doug "ossi and Wayne
Fix. Hockey begins Saturday also, at 2:00. This saturday, there won't be any
ice but a chalk talk is planned. Don Viai will be heading this group. One team
will enter the Belt Line League w ich John Maruicci has been promotin,,, help will
come from the Lions Club.
IV. LIGHTS: At the golden Oaks, Natchez, Papoose and Seeman Parks,
we are intthe process of replacing the old lights with new 18" Sports Lighters.
There are removeable. The old ones can be used for the shelters etc.
V. SAATING RINKS: Have been set up at Wesley, Golden Oaks, Lions
Club, Seeman, Natches, Noble, Westview and Sandberg. A decision as to the Glenview
Terrace area has not been reached.
VL. NE'N LAND: There is some new land available off Medicine Lake
Road in the northwest corner of the Village. The cost is still in question.
VII. SRA MEETING: 71as held November 24th at the Carl Sandberg School.
It dealt with 10 years of growth in the suburbs. Information on Park acreage,
money spent per capita, etc was displayed. Mayor Carl Nadasdy welcomed a crowd of
about 300 consisting mainly of elected officials from the various suburbs. J finny
Blanchard spoke on his team the Yankees.

VIII. SRA: In order for the Golden Valley Recreation Association
to derive benefit from the SRA a larger representative graup is necessary. If
the association isn't able to do this the Golden Valley RQcreation Comm ssi n
Can apply for membership. 1 Action on the matter won't be know till the first
of th e year.
It was dicided by the members present that if no pertinent business be pendinf,;
in the month of December the December Comnission meeting would not be held and
the next regularly scheduled meeting would be the last Thursday in January.
With no further business John Hl Sullivan moved the meeting be adjounred.
John Brynes seconded. Meeting adjourned at 9:00 P.M.
