11-29-1962Minutes of the Regular Meeting
PARK AND RECREATION COMMISSION OF
Village of Golden Valley
November 29, 1962 7:00 P.M.
The Park and Recreation Commission of the Village of Golden Valley met
at its regular monthly meeting at the Village Hall, Thursday, November 29th,
1962 at 7:00 P.M. Board members present: Dr. Ray G. Petersen, Chairman,
John W. Byrnes, Max Green, John H. Sullivan, and Mrs. Laura Scheffler.
Board members absent: Ray Stockman and Graydon Ewald.
The meeting was called to order at 7:00 P.M. by Chairman Petersen. He
then called for the approval of the minutes from the October 22, 1962
meeting. The minutes were approved as written.
Mr. Brenna then brought forth a brief resume of the fall and winter
program. He expatiated on the number of residents who were being served.
Mr. Brenna then brought forth two items relating to Park Aquisition.
One: Longerbone Property. The area in question comprises two & a half
lots adjacent to Wesley Park. The area will give us an exit and entrance
to the west. The asking price is $500. A motion was made by Laura Scheffler
and seconded by John Sullivan that the above mentioned property be
purchased for the said amount upon the approval of our recommendation to
the City Council. Motion carried. Two: McCarthy Property. In a recent
discussion with Mr. Ulstad he felt the property could be obtained for a
price of $2,000. The motion was made by John Byrnes and seconded by
Max Green that no more than $2,000 would be offered for said property.
Motion carried.
At this time Mr. & Mrs. Stuart Gordon brought forth an explanation of a
project conceived by themselves and endorsed by the Golden Valley League
of Women Voters, namely, "Pathways for Golden Valley". They produced a
map of the Village upon which Pathways were traced from park to park and
points of special interest. The basis for such a project is to promote
Physical Fitness to encourage youngsters and adults to utilize their
physical being, more so than we are doing today. After a fine presentation,
Board members present offered a general endorsement of their idea.
Further discussion will be brought forth at our next meeting.
Mr. Brenna then brought forth a general breakdown of cost estimates
pertaining to the Park portion of our forth coming bond issue, park by
park. The total figure represented eight areas for an estimated $212,000.
After considerable discussion the above mentioned figure can conceivably
be reduced. Further discussion on refining costs will be forth coming
at future meetings.
Also Mr. Brenna read a letter from Mr. Kenneth Larkin from Kansas City,
Missouri. Mr. Larkin was under the impression that a retainer fee of
$600 was due him for the information he gave forth in our behalf so that
a much more concise picture of our pool problem could be obtained.
Mr. Brenna then mentioned that the night the pool committee and Park
Board talked with Mr. Larkin, two items were somewhat 'in the air'.
We therefore felt that we needed professional advise before going to
the Village Council the following day.
The consensus of Board members present, the professional advise was
asked, we definitely, therefore owe an obligation. At this point,
Mr. Brenna mentioned he would call Mr. Larkin and talk to him about
the matter.
Mr. Brenna mentioned that in talking with Mr. Ulstad, the matter of
appointing an engineer for the pool, he would like to see the Park
Board and Pool Committee set up by appointment all those interested
in pool design and engineering on a certain date to hear each ones
perspectus, and then make a recommendation to the City Council.
All Board members present were in favor of this arrangement.
There being no further business to discuss, the meeting adjourned
at 10:30 P.M.
