PARK AND RECREATION COMMISSION OF
Village of Golden Valley
April 24th, 1963 7:00 P. M.
The Park and Recreation Commission met at the firm of Harrison, Brauer, and
Ripple, site planning consultants. Mr. Don Brauer read his firms proposed contract
for planning our parks: Woodlawn, Natchez, Scheids, Yosemite, Lion's Club and
Wesley. A discussion, and illustrations by Mr. Brauer followed.
The Commission then proceeded to the Village Hall to resume their Regular Monthly
Meeting.
The meeting was called to order at 9:00 P. M. by Chairman Peterson. Members
present: Dr. Ray Peterson, Chairman, John H. Sullivan, Ray Stockman, John Byrnes,
Max Green and Laura Scheffler. Board members absent: Graydon Ewald. Also
present: John L. Brenna, and Mr. William Haldy.
Mr. Bill Haldy was given the floor to ask questions about the Park and Recreation
Department's procedure of hiring summer employment. He stated he had talked to the
Park and Recreation Department Director, John L. Brenna, about receiving a position,
but was not considered. Mr. Baldy then presented two petitions s -lacing his
qualifications and the desire of the signees to have him considered for a position.
The Park and Recreation Commission stated that Mr. Haldy had never filled out an
application, and could not be recognized until he had done so. Mr. Haldy stated
he would come in again and do so.
At this time, Mr. Brenna gave us the Municipal Pool developments.
1. The first brochure from the Swimming Pool Committee titled "The Answers
to 10 Questions about the Proposed Golden Valley Municipal Pool" was sent to
every address in Golden Valley.
2. A second borchure is being printed to give out to all of the school
children.
3. A committee is going to call every resident in Golden Valley to answer
more questions and remind everyone to vote.
4. Posters are being made to be placed in all of the stores and shopping
centers.
A discussion was held on whether a second brochure was necessary or not, as the
cost is going to $185.00 to have it printed up.
A motion was made by Max Green that an abbreviated brochure should be made up and
distributed to all the schools in Golden Valley. Seconded by Laura Scheffler.
The motion was carried.
John Brenna then told the Commission of some fill material available to us through
Dan Lynch for 10¢ a ,yard, approximetely 50,000 yards. The offer was discussed.
A motion was made by Max Green that we cannot accept the offer of 10¢ a ,yard for
fill material from Dan Lynch at this time. John Byrnes seconded. The motion was
carried.

At this time., John Rrenna briefed us on the property bt,ing acquired. The Elmo
Ginco property., which is 5 acres being donated, deeds are being drawn up now.
Fred Jones property, which is 9-1 acres, acquisitioned, deeds must be signed.

John Brenna then gave a brief resume' of our summer personnel - who are all
coming back to work for us, except two.
At this timel Ray Stockman proposed we start an earlier baseball program for the
youngsters. Laura Scheffler suggested that teen dances be started again because
there have been quite a few requests for them from both aduits and teen-agers.
Dr. Peterson then gave a resume' of our meeting with Don Brauer for Max Green,
who was not present. A discussion followed as to whether we would engage
Harrison, Brauer, and Ripple, consult some other firms, or do the work ourselves.
A motion was made by Laura Scheffler that it be recommended we accept Harrison,
Brauer, and Ripple, site planner proposed contract for planning our parks:
Woodlawn., Natchez, Yosemite, Scheids, Lion's Club and Wesley. Seconded by Max
Green. More discussion was held. The motion was carried by a vote of 3 to 2.
Ray Stockman, John Byrnes, opposed.
At this time a motion was made by Ray Stockman that John Brenna and the Engineering
Department take steps to eleviate the problem of the open ditch by Lion's Club
Park, West. Seconded by John Sullivan. The motion was carried.
The meeting was adjourned at 11:00 P. M.
