4-29-19651 Minutes PARK & RECREATION? COMMISSION OF THE VILLAGE OF GOLDEN VALLEY April 29, 1965 Regular Meeting Board members present: Laura Scheffler, Chairman, Stan Anderson, John Byrnes, Ray Petersen, John Sullivan. Members absent: Gene RoelRe, Roy Yamahiro. Also present: John Brenna, Director and Dolores Peterson, Secretary. Chairman Scheffler called the meeting to order at 7;20 p.m. Minutes of the April 19th Special Meeting were approved as written. Chairman Scheffler reported meeting with the Council Members before their April 20th meeting. Mrs Scheffler stated that the Councilmen rejected the idea of the formai endorsement and Suburban press pic- ture and article, but that the Commission had their full permission to use their names on any article providing they have read it first. Mayor Nadasdy suggested "Letters to the Editor" in the Minneapolis Star might be more beneficial as not as great a number of people subscribe to the Suburban Press as do to the Minneapolis Star. BOND ISSUE DEVELOPMENT Mr Brenna reported receiving bond issue endorsements from the Soft- ball Association, League of Women Voters and the Little League. Much discussion ensued concerning information that should appear on the brochures. Individual taxation amounts were discussed. It was the consensus of board members present that the information should include the individual amount payable the first year on a $21,000 home and that this figure dwindles to said amount the 20th year, the average yearly tax being $1.24. SUMMER PROGRAM The summer program begins June 2.1 and ends August 13. At this time Mr Brenna reported that 36 summer personnel have been hired, of whom all but four live in Golden VaDey, and that many maintenance applications are being held on file, hopefully, until the bond issue vote. Mr Brenna also reported the Dundee Nursery is participating in the Job Corps Program and has offered the services of twenty boys for a three week period. RICE & SWEENEY LAKES At this point Mr Brenna brought forth a memo received by the Park & Recreation Commission from Donald Sorensen, Village Engineer, requesting a recommendation concerning public acces on Rice Lake® and Sweeney Lake. Much discussion ensued. Minutes - April 29, 1965 page 2 Dr Petersen moved "that the Park and Recreation Commission recommend that there be no further public access to Sweeney Lake" and further moved "that pending a report of the U S Corps of Engineers, we recommend that provisions be made for the Park & Recreation Commission to gain access and recreational area adjacent to Rice Lake. Motion seconded by John Sullivan and carried. SCHEID PARK Mr Brenna reported that Mr Roelke had spoken with the Village Manager concerning the Scheid Park return proposal and that there is a legal question that must be cleared up with the Village Attorney. Mr Brenna reported that Toro was the lonw bidder on the bid let for the new mower for our maintenance department. The Council granted them the bid for $5,298.00. LIONS CLUB PARK Mr Ron Hammer, representing the Lions Club, appeared before the Commission. Mr Hammer stated that the Lions Club wished to donate funds for park development, preferably recreational equipment, and they were especially interested in baseball equipment.
