A regular meeting of the Golden Valley Park & Recreation Commission
was held on Thursday, August 253, 1966, at 7:00 p.m. at the Golden
Valley Civic Center, 7800 Golden Valley Road, Golden Valley, Minn.

SCHEID PARK
At the June Park & Recreation Commission meeting, members present
again pursued the subject of safe access to Scheid Pari:. After
considerable discussion, it was their consensus to approach the
Village Council for aid in procuring a safe means of access to
the park. On June 19,1966, Dr. Peterson, Daniel Oukrop and John
Brenna presented a request in aid for the purchase of a pedestrian
footbridge for Scheid Park.
The Council moved to approve the footbridge in principle, subject
to more detailed information as to the cost of a footbridge and
needed fencing, their approval also included Hennepin Counties
sharing in the project. The Park & Recreation Commission was in-
structed to report back when the above was accompliehed.
At this time Mr Brenna brought forth some informal quotes on Bridge
Construction.
1. Jacus-Amble Bridge Consultants - structural steel and concrete,
estimated cost of pedestrian footbridge - CSAH 66 & Regent
Avenue North - $30,000
2. Bridge Consultant John Gustafson - wooden structure - CSAH
66 and Regent Avenue North - $10,000
3. Chain Link Fence from Regent Avenue North to Toledo Avenue
North - $1,400
After much discussion Mr. Brenna was instructed to concur with the
Village Staff and then approach Hennepin County.
PAPOOSE PARK
Mr. Don Leese and Mr. Jerry Reinholtz were present to discuss
Papoose Park with the Commission. They requested that consideration
be given Papoose Park for a part time summer playground activity
program next summer. Also, they asked for a hard surfaced area,
which they were advised, will be in this summer.
HAMPSHIRE PARK

regarding the four lots in the western portion of Hampshire Park
now under condemnation proceedings. Our Attorney stated that the

land commissioners will be appointed next week and we then can
proceed with filling that portion of the park. Mr Brenna also
brought forth the park layout and explained same.
GOLF COURSE
Mr. Brenna related that the Federal Government has placed a hold
on allocations concerning their Open Space Program. The Golf
Committee has written a letter to the Village Attorney, asking for
his help in securing any further information, and he in turn has
called Washington. The Golf Committee will be meeting early next
week to determine what their next step will be.
SUMMER PROGRAM
Mr. Brenna brought forth attendance figures and reports on the
parks summer playground activities for this past summer. The
playground attendance was 2,587 per week, which is approximately
500 more than last year. He reported that the Golf Program was
filled very early, the Puppet Shows put on by Suburban Recreation
were well attended, the Tennis Program at Seeman was full and that
Golden Valley High was not filled to capacity, but went well. The
Picnic and Party Service was very well utilized. Swimming is down
considerably but those who attended benefited greatly. The Knothole
Baseball program started off with a big bang with the donations
of T-shirts from Frank Newman. We introduced a new Science Club
this year, which was tremendous. All in all, the program operated
very well.
PARK DEVELOPMENT
Mr. Brenna showed pictures of park development in each of the
parks. Our park construction looks real good for 1966 and appears
to be making much headway. He also told of the facility of the
Ford Building available to the Maintenance Personnel and Park
Foreman.

each item individually, covering each increase in detail. The
Commission's consensus was that the budget was very well prepared.
A mot'11 on was a tertained for adjournment at 10:45 P.M.
