8-25-19661 REGULAR MEETING OF THE GOLDEN VALLEY PARK & RECREATION COMMISSION August 25, 1966. A regular meeting of the Golden Valley Park & Recreation Commission was held on Thursday, August 253, 1966, at 7:00 p.m. at the Golden Valley Civic Center, 7800 Golden Valley Road, Golden Valley, Minn. Chairman pro tem John Sullivan presided and the following members were present: John Byrnes, Raymond Petersen and Laura Scheffler. Members absent: Gene Roelke, Stan Anderson and Dan Oukrop. Also present were John L. Brenna, Director and Phyllis Jordahl, secretary. The minutes of June 30, 1966 regular meeting were approved as written. SCHEID PARK At the June Park & Recreation Commission meeting, members present again pursued the subject of safe access to Scheid Pari:. After considerable discussion, it was their consensus to approach the Village Council for aid in procuring a safe means of access to the park. On June 19,1966, Dr. Peterson, Daniel Oukrop and John Brenna presented a request in aid for the purchase of a pedestrian footbridge for Scheid Park. The Council moved to approve the footbridge in principle, subject to more detailed information as to the cost of a footbridge and needed fencing, their approval also included Hennepin Counties sharing in the project. The Park & Recreation Commission was in- structed to report back when the above was accompliehed. At this time Mr Brenna brought forth some informal quotes on Bridge Construction. 1. Jacus-Amble Bridge Consultants - structural steel and concrete, estimated cost of pedestrian footbridge - CSAH 66 & Regent Avenue North - $30,000 2. Bridge Consultant John Gustafson - wooden structure - CSAH 66 and Regent Avenue North - $10,000 3. Chain Link Fence from Regent Avenue North to Toledo Avenue North - $1,400 After much discussion Mr. Brenna was instructed to concur with the Village Staff and then approach Hennepin County. PAPOOSE PARK Mr. Don Leese and Mr. Jerry Reinholtz were present to discuss Papoose Park with the Commission. They requested that consideration be given Papoose Park for a part time summer playground activity program next summer. Also, they asked for a hard surfaced area, which they were advised, will be in this summer. HAMPSHIRE PARK Mr. Brenna made mention that he had contacted our Village Attorney regarding the four lots in the western portion of Hampshire Park now under condemnation proceedings. Our Attorney stated that the Golden Valley Park & Recreation Commission August 25, 1966 Page 2 land commissioners will be appointed next week and we then can proceed with filling that portion of the park. Mr Brenna also brought forth the park layout and explained same. GOLF COURSE Mr. Brenna related that the Federal Government has placed a hold on allocations concerning their Open Space Program. The Golf Committee has written a letter to the Village Attorney, asking for his help in securing any further information, and he in turn has called Washington. The Golf Committee will be meeting early next week to determine what their next step will be. SUMMER PROGRAM Mr. Brenna brought forth attendance figures and reports on the parks summer playground activities for this past summer. The playground attendance was 2,587 per week, which is approximately 500 more than last year. He reported that the Golf Program was filled very early, the Puppet Shows put on by Suburban Recreation were well attended, the Tennis Program at Seeman was full and that Golden Valley High was not filled to capacity, but went well. The Picnic and Party Service was very well utilized. Swimming is down considerably but those who attended benefited greatly. The Knothole Baseball program started off with a big bang with the donations of T-shirts from Frank Newman. We introduced a new Science Club this year, which was tremendous. All in all, the program operated very well. PARK DEVELOPMENT Mr. Brenna showed pictures of park development in each of the parks. Our park construction looks real good for 1966 and appears to be making much headway. He also told of the facility of the Ford Building available to the Maintenance Personnel and Park Foreman. BUDGET 1967 Mr. Brenna presented the budget to the Commission and discussed each item individually, covering each increase in detail. The Commission's consensus was that the budget was very well prepared.
