8-28-19691 REGULAR MEETING OF THE GOLDEN VALLEY PARK & RECREATION COMMISSION August 28, 1969 A regular meeting of the Park and Recreation Commission was held at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 28, 1969 at the Brookview Municipal Community Center, 8200 Wayzata Boulevard, Golden Valley, Minnesota. Chairman Kahn presided, and the following members were present: Forster, Jodan, Oukrop, Petersen, Sullivan, Tart. Absent: Brand, Fischer, Hammer, Herje, Kelby, Weisenburger. Also present: Lloyd Roepke, Park Supervisor; John Brenna, Park and Recreation Director; Lois Schaaf, Secretary. MINUTES MOVED by Tart, second by Forster to approve the minutes of the July 31, 1969 regular meeting as mailed. Carried. PARK SUB -COMMITTEE REPORT 1 - Possis Machine PropertX. MOVED by Petersen, second by Tart that the mi !on not consider this property for acquisition at this time. Carried. 2 - Pond Area - Glenwood Avenue and R. R. tracks. MOVED by Peter- sen, second y Brown that since this property cannot be built on, that we drop consideration of leasing this area. Carried. 3 - 5 lots on North side of Medley Hills Park owned by Elmo Ginkel. MOVED by Petersen, second y Forster to pursue purchaseo this pro- perty pending investigation of tax status. Carried. 4 - Wesley Park - 2 vacant lots on West side. Park Sub -Committee recommen s that r. Brenna investigate price and assessments. RECREATION SUB -COMMITTEE REPORT MOVED by Brown as follows: Recommendation for Brookview Pool. Strategy: Try for a smaller, acceptable deficit by increasing usage somewhat, at substantially higher pricer. Promote attendance vigorously. Plan to sell: Family membershipe -- 250 @ $20.00 $7,000.00 (offered to all residents along with golf patron card mailing.) Ticket book sales -- @ $3.50 and $5.00 S3,000.00 (Fewer books than this year, but at higher prices) August 28, 1969 Page -2- Cash -- @ 50C and 75C $1,500.00 (About the same as this year) Lessons -- 500 @ $5.00 $2,500.00 (vs 424 this year) $14,000.00 (Deficit $ 3,810.00 This amounts to: verage o 225 swimmers per day for 14 weeks @ 50C (This year, we averaged about 175 swimmers per day -- 200 or more after June -- for 11 weeks @31C.) Promote pool use, ticket purchase --monthly Village bulletin --Spring mailing with golf patron card offers. --Special events (races, exhibitions, fun nite, picnic nite, etc.) --Buses circling Village. Second by Tart, carried unanimously. MOVED by Brown that a letter be sent to Mrs. Barbara Olson, Pool Director, commending her for her work and evaluation. Carried. BROOKVIEW SUB-COMMITTEE REPORT Chairman Tart informed the Commission that Ross Stevens, Golf Pro- fessional had asked about his contract for 1970. The decision on whether or not his contract would be renewed was left up to Mr. Brenna to pursue. NEW BUSINESS LETTER FROM SAFETY COUNCIL A letter was brought forth concerning safety procedures, reporting accidents procedures and pool signs. Mr. Brenna stated that he had received the same letter, and that he had answered said letter. BUDGET COMMITTEE REPORT MOVED by Brown, second by Tart that the Commission recommend to the Village Council that the 2nd mill for Park construction was necessary. RESERVATIONS - Brookview Municipal Golf Course MOVED by Tart, second by Forster, that non-Patron Card holders be able to make reservations one (1) day in advance for the balance of the season. Carried. F� 1 August 28, 1969 DIRECTOR'S REPORT Page -3- Golf Professional - Mr. Brenna read Mr. Ross Steven's letter of resignation. MUVED by Tart, second by Forster to accept Mr. Steven's resignation. Carried. Mr, Brenna recommended to the Commission that we bring in 2 teaching professionals for the summer months and try to get along without a professional at this time. The Brookview Sub -Committee will meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, September 2nd to discuss Mr. Brenna's suggestion. There will be a Special Meeting of the Park and Recreation Commission at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, September 2nd immediately after the Brookview Sub -Committee meeting. MOVED by Tart, second by Oukrop to send letters of appreciation to all Summer Program Supervisors. Carried. MOVED by Oukrop, second by Jodan to send a letter of appreciation to the Police Reserves for their assistance to our Summer Program. Carried.
