GOLDEN VALLEY PARK AND RECREATION BOARD
November 18, 1971
A regular meeting of the Golden Valley Park and Recreation Board
was held on Thursday, November 18 1971 at 7:30 p.m. at the Brook -
view Municipal Community Center, 6200 Wayzata Boulevard, Golden
Valley, Minnesota.
Chairman Herje presided, and the following members were present:
Brown, Gergen, Petersen, Tart. Absent: Brand, Durda, Hammer. Also
present were Mary Anderson, Irene Kaplan, Nancy Rholl and Betty
Waldhauer representing the League of Women Voters; Dick Rosland,
Assistant Park and Recreation Director; Corey Bakken, Golf Operations
Manager; John Brenna, Park and Recreation Director; Lois Schaaf,
Secretary.
MINUTES
MOVED by Brown, seconded by Gergen to approve the minutes of the
Regular Meeting of October 28, 1971 as mailed. Carried.
COMMUNITY SCHOOL PROGRAM
At this time, Mr. Rosland stated that the Community School Program
that school district #281 is presently working toward, and that is
under the Minnesota State Department of Education, will be discussed
in detail at the Minnesota Recreation and Park Conference on December
1st. Mr. Rcsland stated that he will report back on any additional
findings relative to the program.
VILLAGE PONDS AND NATURAL AREAS
At this time, Mrs. Herje stated that a meeting to discuss various
village ponds and natural areas will be held at Brookview on January
13th at 7:30 p.m. Mrs. Herje asked Mr. Brown and Dr. Petersen, our
Environmental Sub. --Committee to attend.
WINTER PROGRAM REVIEW
Mr. Rosland, Assistant Park and Recreation Director, brought forth a
review of the 1971-72 winter program. Mr. Rosland stated that basket-
ball, ski insturctions, volleyball, swimming instruction, senior
citizens, broom ball, men's night in the gym, teen center and art
lab are all under way. He also stated that due to the unusual warm
weather, our hockey and general skating program is a bit behind.
GOLF CAR REPORT
Mr. Bakken, Golf Operations Manager, brought forth a report depicting
our golf car operation. Mr. Bakken stated that for the number of
GOLF ROUNDS played, our golf car fleet is adequate at this time. He
also atated that when our present golf car lease expires, and if at
that time it is economically feasible, we should look at the possibi-
lity of buying our own fleet.

BROOKVIEW OPERATION REPORT
At this time, Mr. Bakken brought forth his year end report showing
a cash analysis of income and disbursements. His report was set
forth in that each sub -operation (i.e. Pro -Shop, Grill, etc.) was
shown so that a clearer picture can be seen of each activity's
performance. After little discussion, board members present thanked
Mr. Bakken for a job well done.
LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS
Mrs. Irene Kaplan from the League of Women Voters, displayed and ex-
plained a mpa depicting a layout for hiking and biking trails for
Golden Valley. After much discussion, it was MOVED by Petersen and
seconded by Tart that we approve the trailways concept as presented
by the League of Women Voters. Carried.
5 ACRES - DULUTH AND PENNSYLVANIA
At this time, discussion ensued relative to the use of the five acres
of Village owned property that is located just north of the Olson
Elementary School at Duluth and Pennsylvania. After much discussion,
it was MOVED by Petersen, and seconded by Brown to recommend to the
Village Council that the Park and Recreation Board hold an open
meeting of neighbors in the area..to discuss possibilities for the
five acre site. Carried.
PARK CONSTRUCTION FUND
After considerable discussion relative to a possible budget cut in
the proposed park construction fund, due to current state legislative
action, it was the consensus of board members present that they meet
with the Village Council to discuss the matter in detail.
There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 11:00 p.m.
