REGULAR MEETING
GOLDEN VALLEY PARK AND RECREATION COMMISSION
November 30, 1972
A regular meeting of the Golden Valley Park and Recreation Commission
was held on Thursday, November 30 1972, at 7:30 p.m. at the Brook -
view Municipal Community Center, $200 Wayzata Blvd., Golden Valley,
Minnesota.
Chairman Brown presided, and the following members were present:
Burmeister, Gergen, Hammer, Kelby, Petersen and Thrall. Absent:
Herje. Also present, John Brenna, Park and Recreation Director;
Corey Bakken, Golf Operations Manager; twenty-nine residents of
the Briar Wood Wild Life and Bird Sanctuary area, Lois Schaaf,
Secretary.
MINUTES
Moved by Peterson, seconded by Thrall, to approve the minutes of the
regular meeting of October 26, 1972 as mailed. Carried.
SUB COMMITTEE REPORT - BIRD SANCTUARY - RESIDENT REVIEW
Dr. Petersen, Chairman of the Sub -Committee, gave a br1ef review
of the Sub -Committee meetings and read the minutes of the November
6th meeting.
Mrs. Clifford Norman of the Diggers Garden Club gave the following
as the tentative plan for the Briar Wood Wild Life and Bird Sanctuary:
1. Clean up the area (cement blocks, debris, etc.)
2. Planting of evergreen seedlings, berries, etc. -
cover and food for birds.
3. No additional paths to be added.
4. Each member of the four garden clubs (Golden Valley Garden
Club, Dawn Acres Garden Club, Diggers Garden Club, and
West Suburban Garden Club) will pledge X1.00 per year for
planting and maintenance.
5. All members of the four garden clubs to have a work day
for planting, etc. Childre,i will help with the clean-up.
6. 4-H members and Scouts will build bird houses.
Mrs.�R. J. Kratoska of the Dawn Acres Garden Club showed a plan and
indicated nesting areas, location where they would put in islands
of plantings, evergreens, etc.
After some discussion, it was MOVEDby Peterson, seconded by Thrall,
to recommend the proposed resolution (see attached) to the Village
Council. Carried unanimously.
RESIGNATION - JUDGE DURDA
Chairman Brown read Judge Durda's letter of resignation. A letter
of appreciation will be sent to Judge Durda from the Park and
Recreation Department.

Chairman Brown read a letter from Chris Cherches, City Manager of St.
Louis Park, asking for permission to flood and maintain a skating rink
on the corner of Douglas Avenue and Natchez Avenue South, Golden Valley
Approved.
MINNEAPOLIS STA2 TRIBUNE SNOWMOBILE DAYS°
Chairman Brown read a letter from the Minneapolis Star and Tribune asking
if they could be permitted to give snowmobiles rides to their paper
carriers from Golden Valley at Brookview Golf Course on December 26, 27,
28, and 29, using four machines. Mr. Brenna stated that he could see no
objection other than the 6" snow cover requirement, and that he would
mark off a section of the course forthem. All members present approved.
RESOLUTION APPROPRIATING PROCEEDS OF 1972 PARK AND TRAILS BOND ISSUE°
Members of the Commission were given copies of the above mentioned
resolution adopted by the Village Council at their November 6, 1372 meeting.
It was suggested that the Sinking Fund be given an account number, and
that an accounting of this fund be given along with the rest of the
appropriations of the Bond Issue.
GOLF COURSE - END OF SEASON REPORT'
Corey Bakken, Golf Operations Manager, submitted and briefly explained
his end of the season report.
Chairman Brown thanked Mr. Bakken for a job well done during the past
season.
SELECTION OF ARCHITECT
Discussion was held on the presentations of the eight architects
interviewed at the Special Meeting of November 16, 1972, Chairman Brown
asked for nominations from the Commission members.
Nominarions: Thrall - Armstrong, Torseth, Skold and Vdeen
Peterson - Iry Kilstofte and Associates
After further discussion and a secret vote, it was MOVED by Kelby,
seconded by Burmeister to recommend Armstrong, Torseth, Skold, and
Rydeen as architects for the Park Shelter Buildings. Carried.
SIGUAD OLSON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL RE: OUTDOOR ENVIRONMENTAL CLASSROOM
After reading the agreement submitted by Robbinsdale School District #281
and discussing same, it was MOVED by Peterson, seconded by Hammer to
recommend to the Village Council that said agreement be accepted with the
following change: Page 1, paragraph 2, change "dedicated" to read
"designated". carried, unanimously. (See attached agreement)
TRAIL COMMITTEE
A joint meeting of the Park and Recreation Commission and the Trails
Committee is planned for Wednesday, December 13, 1972, at 7:30 p.m.
at the Brookview Community Center.

DESIGN PROPOSALS TOT LOTS AND PLAY AREAS
John Brenna read the proposals from three landscape architects f®r
five parks (tot lots and play areas). After some discussion, it
was MOVED by Gergen, seconded by Burmeister to recommend said
agreements. Carried.
SNOWMOBILE PERMITS
Moved by Hammvr, seconded by Peterson, that the Rules and Regulations
for Snowmobiling at Brookview Golf Course for 1971 apply for the
coming season with the fold.owing changes: Rule No. 2 to read "The
use of Brookview Golf Course is restricted to Golden Valley residents
who have purchased a snowmobile permit. Costs of permits to be
$10.00 for the first vehicle and X5.00 for each additional vehicle
in the family.
Rule No. 6 to be deleted and the following inserted in its place:
"The Park and Recreation Department will patrol the course, and
reserve the right to revoke permits in the case of repeated
violations.
Carried unanimously.
DECEMBER MEETING DATE
The next regular meeting of the Golden Valley Park and Recreation
Commission will be at 7:30 p.m.Dgcember 28, 1972, at the Brookview
CommunityCenter.
ADJOURNMENT
There being no further business, it was moved by Hammer, seconded by
Thrall to adjourn the meeting at 11:30 p.m.
