REGULAR MEETING
GOLDEN VALLEY PARK AND RECREATION COMMISSION
February 22, 1973
A regular meeting of the Golden Valley Park and Recreation
Cammission was held at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 22, 1973
at the Brookview Municipal Community Center, 8200 Wayzata Blvd.
Golden Valley, Minnesota.
Vice Chairman Hammer presided, and the following members were
present: Burmeister, Petersen, Kelby, Thrall and Herje. Absent:
Gergen, Brown; also present, Richard Fieg, electrical consultant
W. J. Sutherland Associates; Ruth Fahrendorff, student, Environ-
mental Science Center; Corey Bakken, Golf Operations Manager;
John Brenna, Park and Recreation Director.
MINUTES
Moved by Petersen, seconded by Herje, to approve the minutes of
the Regular Meeting of January 25, 1973, as mailed with the
following changes: Page 1, ARCHITECTS -BUILDING DESIGN REVIEW
to read as follows: "At this time, Mr. Armstrong and Mr. Grabow
brought forth redesigns for the Lions Park, Woodlawn Park, and
Brookview Park buildings - Page 2 RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE TRAILS
COMMITTEE sentence 5, to read asfollows: Assist with public
hearings as requested." Carried.
Moved by Petersen, seconded by Burmeister, to approve the minutes
of the Special Meeting of February 1, 1973, as mailed. Carried.
ELECTRICAL CONSULTANT
At this time, Mr. Richard Fieg, brought forth a brochure depicting
the mansard light fixture that represented stationing at 100
foot intervals. Mr. Fieg stated that the fixtures would fit the
budget and hold photometrically. Mr. Fieg stated that the above
fixture could be affixed to either an aluminum or wooden pole.
After much discussion on the above, it was moved by Burmeister,
and seconded by Petersen, that we recommend the mansard fixture
with wood poles. Carried.
RUTH FAHRENDORFF - COMMUNITY ENVIRONMENTAL STUDY PROGRAM
At this time, Mrs. Fahrendorff, a recent graduate of the above
program stated that a number of recent graduates of the above
program would like to organize and evaluate the remaining
undeveloped open space in Golden Valley. Mrs. Fahrendorff
stated that her group would like to see a representative from
Golden Valley Park and Recreation Commission

each Commission linked with members from the Community Environ-
mental Study Program into a task force and pursue the above
objectives. At this time, Mr. Brenna stated that the prime
responsibility in evaluating our natural open spaces was given
to the Planning Commission and suggested that Mr. Fahrendorff
should approach the Planning Commission and bring forth their
proposals. It was the consensus of members present that the Park
and Recreation Commission would be happy to supply a represent-
ative for this worth -while project.
GOLF POLICIES - Senior Citizens and Junior Patron Cards
At this time, Mr. Bakken brought forth his recommendations relative
to Senior citizen and Junior golf players. After much discussion,
it was moved by Herje that Golden Valley residents 62 years of
age, and older, will be offered a $10.00 Senior Citizen patron
card. The fee will entitle the holder to the same discount as
the regular patron card holder. Also on Friday mornings, prior
to 10:30 a.m. free play will be extended to Golden Valley Senior
Citizens who hold a Senior Citizen patron card. If sufficient
interest is shown on Fridays, a league or tournament activity
will be arranged.
That Golden Valley residents who have not reached their 18th
birthday by April lst of each year, will be offered a $10.00
junior patron card. The fee will entitle the holder to the same
discount as the regular patron card holder. Also, on Tuesday
mornings prior to 10:30 a.m., free play will be extended to Golden
Valley juniors who hold a Junior patron card. League and tourna-
ment activity are available for junior players. Seconded by
Kelby. Carried.
SEASON GOLF TICKET
After little discussion, it was moved by Herje, and seconded by
Kelby, that the season golf ticket be disallowed for the 1973
season. No vote was called for, therefore, the question will
be continued at the regular meeting in March.
JOINT MEETING ST. LOUIS PARK & GOLDEN VALLEY PARK AND
RECREATION COMMISSIONS.
At this time, the St. Louis Park Park and Recreation Commission
reviewed their cities progress relative to the acquisition and
future development of their nature interpretive center
Presentations were made by Mr. Brauer of Brauer and Associates,
a consultant to their nature area, and Mr. George Haun, Park and
Recreation Director of St. Louis Park. The question of 3.2 acres
that the Village of Golden Valley owns and abutts the nature
center was brought forth; also discussion arose relative to an

access point for residents of Golden Valley via our proposed
trail system. It seemed the general consensus that the 3.2
acres was a link in establishing a shore line trail system
for the nature center, plus accomodate the possibility of an
access point for the Village of Golden Valley.
It was stated that further design design plans are in the making and
at a later date when plans are more specific, the St. Louis
Park Park and Recreation Commission would like to meet again
and firm up the disposition of the 3.2 acres.
COMMISSION MEMBERS
At this time, Mr. Brenna stated that Dr. Thomas Jackson and
Janet Deubner were appointed to the Park and Recreation
Commission, and will be in attendance at the March meeting.
Mr. Brenna also stated that Mrs. Herje was appointed to the
Planning Commission. Members present asked that a letter be
sent to Mrs. Herje (who had left the meeting earlier) thanking
her for her many years of devoted service to the Village of
Golden Valley and the Park and Recreation Commission.
ADJOURNMENT
There being no further business, it was moved by Petersen and
seconded by Burmeister to adjourn the meeting at 11:00 p.m.
