BIDS FOR 7 RECREA'T'ION BUILDINGS AND PARK SHOP ADDITION
Joiin Brenna went over the bid figures with the Commission memuers.
Jim Rydeen of Armstrong, Torseth, Skold and Rydeen, Architects, ex-
plained the factors for price increases in tie bids.
1. Unpredictable material costs.
2. Increasing labor costs.
3. Special foundation needs for poor soil conditions,at Hampshire,
Lions and Woodlawn - - total cost $23,000.
4. Increase in size of Park Shop Addition.
The architects believe that the rids represent a true indication of
tae construction market today. The costs exceed file budgeted amounts;
considering the factors involved, this is not uncommon on work Being
bid at this time. After considering the background information re-
quested on tae First Minnesota Construction Company, hlr. Rydeen feels
that this builder can do a capable job.
Discussion ensued on wiietiier or not there are any ways to cut costs:
Concrete block versus brick - maintenance costs on concrete out-
weighed money saved by using concrete block.
Park Maintenance men doing tie interior painting - taking our men
off their regular fobs at that time of year (November - when they
are uudy with readying skating rinks, hockey boards, winterizing
water systems, etc.) would not justify the $5,000 saved.
Cut down size of Recreation Buildings - not justifiaule.
Cut down size of Park Shop Addition - increased size (45 x 75)
cheaper than original size (45 x 60) with mezzanine.
