April 26, 1973
A regular meeting of the Golden Valley Park and Recreation
Commission was held at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 26, 1973,
at the Brookview Municipal Community Center, 8200 Wayzata
Boulevard, Golden Valley, Minnesota.
Chairman Brown presided, and the following members were present:
Burmeister, Duebner, Gergen, Hammer, Jackson, Kelby, and
Petersen; absent, Thrall. Also present, John Brenna, Director
of Park and Recreation, and Gertrude Peterson,Secretary.
MINUTES
It was moved by Burmeister, and seconded by Duebner, to approve
the minutes of the regular meeting of March 29, 1973. Carried.
MEDLEY HILLS ACQUISITION
At this time, Mr. Brenna stated that he had talked with the
Village attorney, and was informed that any conversations that
Mr. Brenna had previously with the owner of the property relative
to purchase for park purposes are of no consequence in that they
are not binding today. Mr. Brenna stated the value of the
property is X3,900 and there are X1,300 in back taxes. After
much discussion, it was moved by Jackson and seconded by Kelby
that we offer the owner X3,500 {the amount provided for in the
bond issue) Carried.
SOUTH TYROL PARK Sun shelter
At this time, the matter of a change in the park bond issue as
it pertains to a proposed sun shelter in South Tyrol park was
brought forth. The question of whether to invite all of South
Tyrol, or just those people who live in the area bordering the
park was also discussed. After discussion, it was moved by
Jackson and seconded by Petersen that the entire South Tyrol
area be invited to a public meeting to discuss the above
matter. Mr. Brenna was asked to set up a meeting at either the
Prudential Building or the Jewish Community Center, and send
notices to all residents.
TRAILS COMMITTEE
At this time, Rosemary Thorson, Chairman of the Trails
Committee, presented a revised trails map showing limestone
and wood chip trails for the Village of Golden Valley. Mrs.
Thorson stated that the above would cover approximately 9

miles of trail way. Mrs. Thorson also stated that about six
miles of trails could be constructed this year. After much
discussion, it was pointed out that a time table for reaching
the Village Council should be set. It was decided that the
Trails Committee should come back to the next Park and
Recreation Commission meeting with firm up proposals, and at
that time a date will be set for a presentation to the Village
Council.
At this time,Dr. Strue, a member of the Trails Committee, pointed
out that according to our November minutes relative to the
Wildlife and Bird Sanctuary located east of Briarwood, that no
chip trail would be established. Dr. Strue stated that roto -
tilling and a trail way was being established and he wanted to
know why it was being done. Mr. Brenna stated that the roto -
tilling was needed to help in the planting of 800 trees and
shrubs that the garden clubs will be planting in about two weeks.
Mr. Brenna also stated that the trail that was hewed into the
planting area will be roto tilled and planted over.
At this time, Chairman Brown appointed Janet Duebner to act as
the Commission liasian with the Trails Committee to replace Mrs.
Herje.
BROOKVIEW WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION
At the time, the tabled motion relative to the Brookview's Women's
Golf Association by laws was brought forth for discussion. After
considerable discussion, it was moved by Duebner, and seconded
by Petersen, that the new by laws be approved. Carried. The
motion passed four (4) for, three (3 ) against, with one member
abstaining.
BROOKVIEW PARK - Dump
At this time, the matter of dumping on the north end of Brookview
Park was brought forth by members present. Mr. Brenna stated that
the Village does not have a holding area for Village refuse, and
that the dump site is used only as a holding area. Mr. Brenna
stated that when the dump fills up the Village hauls the refuse
to a public dumping area. He also stated that the main reason
we have not set forth any development plans for the dump site area
is that the question of an intersection of some type is still
up in the air for that corner of Brookview Park at Highway #55
and Winnetka Avenue. After some discussion, it was stated that
perhaps some means of beautifying the area may be in order while
the area is being used as a dump.
PARK CONSTRUCTION
At this time, Mr.
REPORT
Brenna stated that all
piling and spread footings
for seven out of
the 8 buildings are now
complete. He also
stated that the electricaal
contractor will start running under
ground cable for
the walk way and street
lights in Brookview Park
