8-15-1978 (special meeting)GOLDEN VALLEY PARK AND RECREATION COMMISSION
August 15, 1978
A special meeting of the Golden Valley Park and Recreation Commission was
held at the Brookview Community Center on Tuesday, August 15, 1978. The
meeting was called to order by Vice Chairman Brown at 7:30 p.m. Attending
members were King, Jaffe, Peterson, Hammer, and Riley. Also present were
members of the Open Space and Environmental Commissions. Approximately
15 residents of the Laurel Avenue Ponds area (Rings Colonial Addition) also
attended the meeting.
Brown introduced the Commissions, John Brenna, Director of Parks and
Recreation, and Diane Sheldon, Naturalist from the St. Louis Park Nature
Center. He then described briefly the functions of the Commissions and
the procedures by which they operate.
Brenna reviewed the history of the ponds and the planting plans for them
which was recommended by the three Commissions to and approved by the City
Council.
Ms. Sheldon described to the group the characteristics which the area will
have once a successful prairie grass planting has been accomplished. She
also answered questions regarding the wildlife which will live in the area.
It was decided that we all should examine a real prairie grass area between
now and September when a final decision must be made regarding next year's
planting. The residents also expressed concern that the plans for
plantings at the back of each lot should be discussed with the affected
residents.
Partial list of residents attending the meeting: Gary Edelston, 170

Keegan, 115 Nevada Avenue South, Charles Alexander (builder), Howard Katz,
