5-19-1980OPEN SPACE AND RECREATION CESSION May 19, 1980 A regular meeting of the Golden Valley Open Space and Recreation Commission was held on May 19, 1980, at 7:30 p.m. at Brookview Community Center. Chairperson Rhoda Jaffe presided, and the folowing menbers were present: Petersen, Benson, Lyons, Burmeister, Nicks, and Johnson. Asproth was absent. Also present were John Brenna and Charles Corlett. MINUTES The minutes of the meeting of April 28, 1980, were approved after being corrected for several spelling errors and the revision of a sentence under the heading "Sports Coaching". POLICIES FOR NANIrNG PARKS Discussion favored keeping the present names for parks. If the names of people are considered, they should be people who have had an effect on the park system. Benson moved that the Commission recommend to the City Council that we not chane the name of North Tyrol Park to Lynch Park. The motion was seconded by Nicks and carried Unanimously. Michs moved that the Commission defer setting guidelines for the naming and re -naming of parks, open space, and trails until more information is available. The motion was seconded by Petersen and carried. PROPOSED COMMUNITY CENTER INCOME PROJECTIONS .conn brenna presented expense figures for three alternative plans - indoor pool, outdoor pool, and combination indoor/outdoor pool. It was suggested that the worksheet of figures be revised to include explanations beside some of the figures to further clarify them, and that headings be put on columns under membership revenues for this same purpose. Income figures were presented for both pool and racquetball facilities with greater income generated by the indoor pool. Brookview remodelling figures were discussed. Operating expenses and net income are almost equal with a projected profit of only $325. This was expected from earlier figures. Burmeister moved that havine reviewed the financial costs for the community center and the Brookview remodelling, we recommend that the Council accept these fugures for their consideration. The motion was seconded by Benson and Passed Unanimously. SUB CONUTTEE ASSIGHIMENTS FOR COMMISSION MNBERS Chairperson Jaffe proposed the formation of three standing committees: 1. Parks open space, and trails 2. Recreation 3. Brookview Open Space and Recreation Commission Page two Members will volunteer to work on these areas of special responsibility for the year. This should cut down on the number of meetings each Commission members has to attend, and also make members more knowledgeable on certain topics. YEARLY COMMISSION WORK CALENDAR The work calendar for the Open Space and Recreation Commission was reviewed and discussed. CHAIRMAN'S REPORT Chairperson Jaffe presented guidelines for development of Golden Valey Open Space (Vogt and Associates) to the City Council, and they in turn want the Commission to make a definite recommendation regarding the spending of monies. The Commission members felt they were not ready to do that at this time, without further studying the figures. Mr. Brenna and his staff will research the figures and work with the Open Space Sub Committee on more difinite recommendations. Chairperson Jaffe also reported that the City Council has approved plans to go ahead with a community center. DIRECTOR'S REPORT Brenna reported that plans are now underway for the General Mills Research Trail, and that these plans include a figure eight in the trail and a bridge creek. The City Council will vote on the Gettelmen .might and the plans include the owners building the trail through the property. The next regular meeting is scheduled for June 23, at 7:30 p.m. ADJOURNMENT Meeting adjourned at 9:45 p.m. Commission members then went to the City Hall to view a video tape of the Coon Rapids indoor/outdoor pool.
