2-24-19861 CITY OF 0311" VALLEY OPEN SPACE AND RBCREATICN ODW SS ICN February 24, 1986 The meeting was called to order by Chair Kahlow at 7:35 PM. The Conmission members in attendance were Mary Kay Watson, Claudia Fuglie, Chuck Burmeister, Gordon McDonald, Jennifer Kahlow, George Murad and Rhoda Jaffe. Also in attendance were Rick Birno, Assistant Recreation Supervisor, Bob Waataja, President of Golden Valley Little League, Rick Jacobson, and Sharyl Thompson. Minutes Chuck Burmeister made the motion ber 21, 1985, November 25, 1985, seconded, and the motion carried. Rick Birno was made to accept the minutes from Octo- and January 27, 1986. Mary Kay Watson Rick Jacobson introduced Rick Birno to the Commission. Rick has been hired on a permanent part-time basis as the Assistant Recreation Supervisor. He will be assisting Sue Cook with the recreation activities, and Barbara Bailey will the Youth Aiding Seniors program. Bob Ykataja - Little League Bob Waataja reviewed the Little League program with the Commission. The registration will be held on March 15th and 17th. The cost is $25 per participant, but no one will be denied for financial reasons. A change was made this year in the minimum age of participants to 8 years old rather than 9 years old as in the past. Chuck Burmeister expressed his concern about this because there could be many 8 year olds who did not have the ability to play Little League and could get discouraged from baseball altogether. He also was concerned about alternatives available for those youngsters who would be cut because of lack of ability. Bob Waataja under- stood the concern and said that the situation would be monitored very closely. Brookview Golf Course Policies & Fees A motion was made by Burmeister and seconded by Jaffe to accept the poli- cies as written. Discussion followed. Rick Jacobson pointed out the con- cerns of a couple members of the Improvements Committee regarding tee times for seniors at a reduced rate. Their original proposal had been 11:00 AM to coincide with other area golf courses. However, the policies state 10:00 AM as the cut-off time. Also, in the past, gift cert i f i Cates given (especially through the men's club) were redeemable at the Brookview Pro Shop or an area sport ing goods store. Thi s was due to a 1 imi ted inventory in the Brookview Pro Shop. Murad commented that the 11:00 seniors tee time was to give seniors extended time to play at the reduced rate, and George also expressed concern that $17.00 for a motorized golf cart was high. After discussion, the motion was passed to accept the policies and fees as written. Open Space & Recreation Commission February 24, 1986 Page 2 Brookview Pool Demolition Rick Jacobson gave background information on the pool demolition and pointed out the memos that had been included in the agenda packet from himself, Bill Joynes, and Mayor Anderson. Burmeister asked the Corrmission for their feelings on the political aspect of removing the pool and replacing it with a parking lot. Jaffe pointed out that the City Council voted to close the pool before any public meeting was called, and then asked the Commission to hold an informational meeting with the public afterwards. Because the public was not informed ahead of time, the issue is sensitive, especially to the former users of the pool. The general consensus of the Commission was that the pool should be demolished, but replacing it with a parking lot immediately should be reviewed. French Regional Park Representative A motion was made by Burmeister and seconded by Watson to recommend Rhoda Jaffe as the representative from Golden Valley to the French Regional Park ODnmission. Motion carried. Wheelchair Fitness Course Rick Jacobson informed the Commission that a grant for the purchase of a wheelchair exercise course has been applied for from Gamefield/WelIs Fargo toward half the cost of the equipment in Mary Hills Park, and Metropolitan Medical Center wi 11 pay for the other half of the cost. Honeywel l wi 11 supply the labor and money for site amenities such as timber for the stations and park benches. Weather permitting, the equipment should be in by June 15th. A ribbon cutting or inauguration will be held. Pool Cormii t tee Burmeister requested that the Commission make any suggestions they may have for alternative uses for a pool in Golden Valley. Requests for proposals have been put out for an architect/consultant and are to be back within two weeks. Farewell to Rhoda Jaffe A cake was presented to Rhoda Jaffe, along with the appreciation of the Commission for her dedication through the years to the City of Golden Valley. Adjournment A motion was made by Jaffe and seconded by Burmeister to adjourn. Chair Kahlow iceCh),ftc Johnson
