Members present: Jim Johnson, George Murad, Claudia Fuglie, Gordy McDon-
ald, Rick Groger, Al Anderegg, Micki Bi x, Rich KrahuIec, Rick Jacobson.
Also present were: Sharyl Thompson, and Tom Klatt, Park and Street Super-
intendent.
Each Corrmission member introduced themselves.
The City Forester had a scheduled conflict and could not attend the meet-
ing. A Forestry report will be given at the April meeting.
A memo to the Commission from Chuck Burmeister was put under the subject of
Pool/Recreational Facility Carmittee Report.
A motion was made by Gordy McDonald and seconded by Claudia Fuglie to
accept the minutes of the February 23rd meeting. Motion carried.

Nominations were opened for Chairperson. George Murad nominated Rick
Groger as Chair. Amot ion was made by George Murad and seconded by Gordy
McDonald to close the nominations. Rick Groger was unanimously elected as
Chair.
George Murad nominated Claudia Fuglie as Vice -Chair. A motion was made by
George Murad and seconded by Gordy McDonald to close the nominations.
Claudia Fuglie was unanimously elected as Vice -Chair.
GZENVIEW 1IIWACE PARK
A resident had been scheduled to come in and present a concern regarding
park usage, but was unable to attend.
PARK AND OPEN SPACE DISCUSSION
Rick Jacobson introduced Tom Klatt to the Commission. He expressed his
appreciation on behalf of the Park and Recreation Department for the excel-
lent job Tom and his staff do and their dedication to their work.
Tom gave the following information on the parks in Golden Valley.
1. Golden Valley has 20 parks, 8 regional with some type of building
2. There are 175 acres of high maintenance park areas (that need to be
mowed).
3. There are 27 ballfields - 7 with fences
4. There are 23 tennis courts
5. There are 6 hockey rinks, 10 general skating rinks
6. Each park has a play area
7. There is a 12 -station vida course at Brookview Park

Future projects include:
1. Upgrade play equipment at all parks
2. Repair and overlay walkways
3. Repair doors on buildings
4. Redo softball and baseball fields
5. Upgrade trails and bog walk
6. Put in park identification signs
7. Upgrade the irrigation system
Tom pointed out that al l of this, and much more is done essential ly by a
crew of 5 men. Col lege students are hired in the summer to help with the
mowing, but he commended the crew on the excellent job they do.
The Commission wanted to go on record that they feel Tom and the park
maintenance crew do an excellent job and provide parks in the City of
Golden Valley that are second to none. They are very proud of the park
system in the City.
Gordy McDonald inquired about a piece of land off Ottawa Avenue and Olson
Memorial Highway that had been donated to the City to be used for park
land. Rick Jacobson will research the stipulations on that dedication and
report back to the Commission.
POOL/REMffICNAL FACILITY COWETIEE REFCRT
Chuck Burmeister was not in attendance at the meeting, .so Rick Jacobson and
Claudia Fuglie updated the Commission on the progress of the neighborhood
meetings. Four meetings had been held. Feedback from more than one
meeting indicated that residents are concerned that they (residents of
Golden Valley) will have priority in usage and fees should the building be
approved. The Cbnmission reviewed a memo from Chuck Burmeister on behalf
of the Pool /Recreational Facility Corrmittee, asking that the Commission
recommend to City Council a policy statement regarding the priority of use.
A motion was made by Al Anderegg and seconded by Rick Groger to adopt a
policy statement that should the recreation center be built, Golden Valley
residents will have first priority in regard to membership availability and

Thee are 10 nature areas (120 acres) with various maintenance levels

There are 7 observation decks in the nature areas, 7 bridges, and one
bog walk with a dock

major projects completed over the past five years include:

New roofs on the park buildings

New floors in the park buildings

Improved lighting in the park buildings
4.
Replaced portions of the exterior of the buildings
5.
Fixed drainage problem at several parks
6.
Replaced hockey boards with temporary ones
7.
Improved hockey and general skating lighting
8.
Primed and painted light poles
9.
Upgraded Lakeview Park with new playground equipment and concrete
curbing. Medley Park is currently being done, and Wesley and South
Tyrol will be done this year.

George Murad reported that the Improvement Comittee had been discussing
the ongoing problem wi h geese. It is not only a problem on the golf
course, but in the park s well. George feels that the golf course rangers
could chase geese as they are on the course. Jim Johnson suggested that
Dr. Cooper from the University of Minnesota come to a Commission meeting
again. Rick Jacobson said there is another geese removal scheduled for
this spring.
NEW BUS INFSS
An information sheet was passed out regarding the Mayor's involvement in a
fund drive for the Red Cross.
