OPEN SPACE & RECREATION COMMISSION
April 24, 1989
Members present: Chair Anderegg, George Murad, Rich Krahulec,
Chuck Burmeister, Rick Groger, Pat Borchert, Jim Johnson. Also
present were: Rick Jacobson, Jonathan Stiegler, Sue Cook, Rick
Birno, and Sharyl Thompson.
The meeting was called to order at 7:02 PM.
There were no agenda changes or additions.
MINUTES
A motion was made by Chuck Burmeister and seconded by George Murad
to accept the minutes of March 20, 1989. Motion carried.
FORESTRY REPORT
City Forester, Jonathan Stiegler, highlighted some points from the
1988 Forestry Report which the Commission received. He expects an
increase in Dutch elm disease due to the drought and high beetle
content. Plantings were done on the golf course, and although
several small trees did not survive, the larger species did quite
well. Trees which do not survive will be replaced under the one-
year guarantee. Jon showed slides depicting the effect of the
drought on the trees in Golden Valley.
Arbor Day is Thursday, April 27, 1989 at KARE 11 at noon.
Rick Jacobson commended Jon on his presentation. Jim Johnson
requested that the minutes show that the Commission feels Jon
Stigler's position is very important to the City and he does a
tremendous job.
RECREATION REPORT
Sue Cook and Rick Birno gave a report on the summer recreation
programs. Rick Birno reported that the youth athletic associations
are doing well; they are all filled to capacity. He also reviewed
a general information sheet outlining the summer youth programs.
Sue Cook an overview of the other offerings including adult and
general year round programs. She handed out flyers on the Concerts
in the Park that will be offered this summer.
Al Anderegg inquired about the resurfacing of the Brookview tennis
courts. Rick Jacobson explained that the courts are resurfaced on
a rotating basis.
Chuck Burmeister complimented the staff on the programming.

OLD BUSINESS
Pat Borchert asked if the sidewalk report had been published.
George Murad was on the Sidewalk Committee in 1987 and he said a
report was made and recommendations given in the order of priority.
Their proposal was accepted. Pat explained that she is on a parent
advisory committee at Meadowbrook School and they are very
concerned that there are no sidewalks along Turners Crossroad,
north from Glenwood. They felt this was very unsafe. The
Commission agreed with the concern and asked for a response from
the City. It was decided that Pat and group from the school write
a letter to the Mayor and City Engineer with their concern.
Rick Jacobson reported that Sheila Miller the Crime Prevention
Specialist, will attend the May meeting to address safety on
trails, as a follow-up from the March Commission meeting.
NEW BUSINESS
Pat Borchert asked whose responsibility it was to clean out the
dead fish from the Laurel Avenue ponds. Rick Jacobson replied that
it was the park maintenance crew who would be taking care of it.
Rick Jacobson explained that ten

condition by the middle of May.
