8-27-1990OPEN SPACE & RECREATION COMMISSION August 27, 1990 Members present: Julie Bergh, Pat Borchert, Rick Groger, Chuck Burmeister, George Murad. Also present were Rick Jacobson, John Day (Girls Slow Pitch Softball), Rick Birno, and Sharyl Thompson, Dee Dee Scanlon, Marti Micks and Kathy Farnham. The meeting was called to order at 7:08 PM. There were no agenda changes or additions. MINUTES A motion was made by Pat Borchert and seconded by Rick Groger to approve the minutes of July 30, 1990. Motion carred. GIRLS SLOWPITCH SOFTBALL REPORT - JOHN DAY Rick Jacobson introduced John Day, the President of the Golden Valley Girls Slowpitch Organization. John gave a brief report on the program which now includes nineteen teams. He said that sponsors contribute $250.00 each toward the program, and each participant pays a fee of $25.00. The Commission expressed their appreciation to John for the work he has put in to make the program a success. SENIOR CITIZEN ANNUAL REPORT - BARBARA BAILEY Barbara Bailey reviewed the senior citizen annual report and gave a brief slide presentation on some of the activities over the past year. Rick Jacobson and the Commission commended Barbara on the excellent work she does with the seniors of Golden Valley. OUTDOOR POOL REFERENDUM DISCUSSION Dee Dee Scanlon, Linda Farnham and Marti Micks were in attendance to participate in the discussion on a pool referendum. Rick Jacobson showed the video tape of the last City Council meeting where it was decided that the Open Space Commission should formulate the process to be followed in having a referendum for an outdoor pool. The City Council asked the Commission to comment on the following: 1) Who should be involved in the rocess and how? (i.e., citizens, petitioners, Open Space Commission, Council, sta 2 A time line for action leading to t e election and a suggested date for the election 3� Other suggestions This recommendation would be presented at the October 2nd City Council meeting in either preliminary or final form. After much discussion, a motion was made by George Murad and seconded by Rick Groger to form a sub -committee of two Commissioners and Dee Dee Scanlon, Marti Micks and Linda Farnham to recommend the process that should be followed in bringing the issue to a referendum. Motion carried. George Murad and Chuck Burmeister agreed to serve on this sub -committee and they would bring a report to the next Open Space Commission meeting.
