MINUTES
A motion was made by George Murad and seconded by Marshall Rappaport to accept the minutes
of June 28, 1993. Motion carried.
GOLF COURSE REPORT - GREG SPENCER, GREENS SUPERINTENDENT
Greg Spencer reported that the excessive rain this season has affected both the conditions of the
golf course and the number of rounds played this summer. Work is progressing on the prac-
tice/lesson tee and green. This fall, drainage work is scheduled on the 9th and 14th fairways.
George Murad inquired about the greens' conditions. Greg replied that he is soliciting advice
from an outside expert to get a second opinion evaluating the problem. In Greg's opinion, the
problem is due to a combination of a lack of sun on certain greens, and heavy wear.
GOLDEN VALLEY BABE RUTH ASSOCIATION - DON HARDING
Don Harding reviewed the Babe Ruth Association. The program is for 13-18 year olds. They use
the baseball fields at Sandburg Middle School. This past summer they had the following teams:
four Jr. Babe teams (13-15 year olds), one Mickey Mantle team (16 year olds), and one Senior
Babe Ruth team (17-18 year olds). One half of the season is recreational and the second half of
the season is more competitive after July 4th with tournament competition..
The Commission commended Don Harding for his contribution and hard work on the behalf of
youth in Golden Valley.
FORESTRY REPORT - AL LUNDSTROM
Al reported that the number of trees with Dutch elm disease is down from last year. He has taken
many phone calls this summer with inquiries about leaf and needle fungus diseases (due to the
heavy rainfall). Fall tree planting will take place at Brookview Park and Lions Park. A $3,500
grant has been received from the Small Business Administration to go toward this tree planting.

BUDGET/CIP
Rick Jacobson updated the Commission on the budget process. The general fund budget is cur-
rently being worked out and the capital improvement budget will be put together in October. Pat
Borchert inquired as to whether or not Brook -view Park improvements would be included in the
capital improvement budget. Rick responded that it will most likely be delayed. Don Taylor, City
Finance Director, has been invited to address the Commission at the next meeting.
OTHER DISCUSSION
Tom Zins asked if the Commission has a role to play in planning physical developments such as
Winnetka Avenue and Bassetts Creek, as well as the future of the Golden Valley hospital prop-
erty. He expressed a desire to have the Commission involved at the beginning of these projects
and felt there should be more communication with the Planning Commission. It was suggested
that City Planner Mark Grimes meet with the Open Space and Recreation Commission. The
Commission concurred with Tom's comments.
Marshall Rappaport complimented the City on the new sidewalk along Golden Valley Road.
ADJOURNMENT
A motion was made by George Murad and seconded by Chuck Cahill to adjourn at 8:50 PM.
