Also present were Rick Jacobson, Director of Parks & Recreation; Sheila Van Sloun, Administrative Secretary; Sue Cook, Recreation Supervisor and Floyd Kalberg, Golden Valley Girls Slowpitch Softball. AGENDA CHANGES OR ADDITIONS There were no changes or additions made to the agenda. APPROVAL OF MINUTES — September 24, 2001 Approval of minutes moved by Jim Johnson and seconded by Lance Ness. Motion carried. GOLDEN VALLEY GIRLS SLOWPITCH SOFTBALL UPDATE — Floyd Kalberg Floyd Kalberg gave the Commission an overview of the program. This non-profit organization consists of girls from predominately Golden Valley and surrounding communities. The Golden Valley Girls Slowpitch program consists of approximately 350 girls and is divided into two divisions, a Junior League (grades 3-6) and a Senior League (grades 7-12). The fee is $50 for the first girl and $40 for subsequent girls in a family. The traveling league is divided into five divisions: twelve and under, fourteen and under, sixteen and under, eighteen and under, and nineteen and up. The league coaches select the traveling teams. Floyd explained that there are typically 12-14 girls on a team, with 10 girls on the field, all of whom are in the batting rotation. RECREATION REPORT — Sue Cook Sue shared with the Commission the success of the Meadowbrook Community Center open house. She also discussed how Golden Valley Park and Recreation will be involved in staffing the facility. Sue then discussed the Youth Basketball program, which is combined with Crystal Recreation. The program is for boys and girls in grades 2-6 with parent volunteer coaches. She explained how each coach gets NYSCA training before the program begins. Sue talked about the Golden Valley warming houses, staffing them, and the condition of the ice Lastly, Sue discussed future programs and projects that she will be working on; Adult Softball, the Spring/Summer 2002 Activities brochure, new programs for Meadowbrook Community Center, Recreation program budgeting and E -Connect (on-line activity registration). 1 RECREATION PROGRAM FEES & CHARGES Rick Jacobson explained to the Commission the increase in fees from 2001 to 2002. He also discussed the $400,000 budget cut for the City. Rick mentioned several options for cutting spending and increasing revenue and how these options would affect the budget. Potential budget adjustments will be discussed by the council at their February 9th workshop. No action was taken on the fee proposal. It will be brought back to the February meeting. OLD BUSINESS None available NEW BUSINESS Roger McConico had some questions regarding the pedestrian bridge on Highway 100. Rick Jacobson explained that it was a joint project with MnDot and City of Crystal. He also explained that MNDOT guidelines had changed, bringing increased cost to the project. Both cities are waiting to find additional funds to keep the project moving. ADJOURNMENT A motion was made by Roger McConico and seconded by Chuck Cahill to adjourn. Motion carried. 1 L�
