Minutes
July 25, 2011
1. Call to Order
Sandler called the meeting to order at 7:00 PM.
2. Roll Call
Present: Roger Bergman, Brad Kadue, Kelly Kuebelbeck, Bob Mattison, Anne Saffert,
Jerry Sandler, Dan Steinberg, Rick Jacobson, Director of Parks and Recreation;
Andy Soltvedt, Recreation Supervisor, and Sheila Van Sloun, Administrative Assistant.
Absent: Emily Piper.

None made.
4. Approval of Minutes—June 27, 2011
MOTION: MOVED by Bergman and seconded by Kadue to approve the June 27 meeting
minutes. Motion carried unanimously.
5. Recreation Report—Andv Soltvedt
Soltvedt gave updates on his programs.
The Adult summer softball league had 32 teams running 700 games at Schaper in a course of 5
weeks. Soltvedt said the fields held up well. He also said the fall league has 32 teams and will
run for 5 weeks beginning mid-August.
Tennis programs are running strong again this season with over 315 registrants.
Concert in the Park ran seven concerts with no rain outs. All the concerts were well attended. At
the Ice Cream Social alone, on July 18, 350 people attended. He added that the Golden Valley
Women's Club donated $800 for the concerts.
Soltvedt said there are four parks available for the Adopt-a-Park program. He said fall renewals
and fall clean-ups are fast approaching.
Soltvedt said Davis Community Center is not getting a lot of use this summer. He also said
rental numbers are good, but open gyms numbers were down.
Soltvedt said the fall brochure is going to print at the end of the week with registration beginning
August 8.
6. Honevwell Little Leaque Area
Jacobson said the project is moving along well. Proposed completion is October 20. He said this
week seeding will take place, along with final grading, fences up, benches and concrete in.
Sandler said he feels the commission should be a part of the Grand Opening in the spring.

7. Capital Improvement Proqram
Jacobson gave an update on the Capital Improvement Program for 2011-2015. He said the city
budget is the same as last year with no increases.
MOTION: MOVED by Mattison and seconded by Kadue to approve proposed 2011-2015
Capital Improvement Program. Motion carried unanimously.
8. Bassett Creek Res�ional Trail
Jacobson said Three Rivers Park District held a meeting a month ago to discuss the trail. He
said that the trail would tie into the Regional Trail System. Three Rivers also plans to meet with
the Courage Center to receive their input.
9. Adiournment
MOVED by Bergman and seconded by Steinberg to adjourn at 8:00 PM. Motion carried
unanimously.

RE: An Invitation to participate in the 4t" Annual Lilac Planting
The 4�' annual Lilac Planting Parting is occurring on Saturday, October 1 from 9 am to 1 pm,
#ollowed by a celebration lunch. I invite you all to participate in opportunity to engage with
other community residents in this program to beautify the city of Golden Valley. If you are
able to let me know by September 28 if you can participate, I would appreciate it. It helps us
to know the number of safety vests and the count for lunch. However you are welcome to
show up the day of the event. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at

2011 Lilac Planting Volunteer Day of Event Information
Thank you for being a part of the Fourth Annual Lilac Planting along Highway 55 on
Saturday, October 1. Here is the information you need to know.
Date
October 1, 2011, rain or shine -dress for the weather
Planting Area
Highway 55 befinreen Glenwood Avenue and Douglas Drive — both north and south side
Welcome Center Location (Registration)
6681 Country Club Drive ( Gurstel Chargo)
Directions
From the west: Take Highway 55 to Rhode Island Avenue, turn left or north on Rhode
. Island Avenue, and take the first right on Country Club Drive. Follow this to 6681 — Gurstel
Chargo, which is just past the Struthers Parkinson Center.
From the East: From Highway 100 on 55, pass Douglas Drive and take the next right onto
Country Club Drive. Or continue to Rhode Island Avenue and turn right. Take the first right
onto Country Club Drive and take to 6681 Gurstel Chargo.
There will be some directional signs and you will see the welcome tent.
Parking - Available at the registration site.
Check In - 8:30 - 9 am—Please complete the attached Liability Release and bring with you.
Celebration Picnic on the lawn after planting
Bring a blanket or chair to sit on.

Toilet
Toilet facilities are available at the Struthers Parkinson Center ne� door.
Refreshments
Coffee and water will be available for volunteers. Following planting activities, lunch will be
served on the lawn.
Equipment
Bring your own tools, clearly marked with your name and identifying information.
Tools required are:
• Gloves
• Shovels
Optional tools that would be helpfuL•
• Pitchfork, baling fork and/or rake for mulch
• Pruning shears
• 5-gallon buckets and/or tarps for hauling mulch
• Wheelbarrow
To increase visibility of volunteers to highway drivers, volunteers are encouraged to wear
bright clothing and safety vests wiH be provided.
