Site 8: Mary Hills Nature Area
Description: Mary Hills Nature Area(See Figure 5-x) is located within a residential neighborhood in the
northeast corner of the city. Based on the Natural Resources Inventory(See Appendix A for more
detailed information),the nature area is comprised of upland and wetland plant communities.
Forest and Woodlands
Forest and woodland communities include upland oak forest and oak woodland with a canopy dominated
by with bur oak. Disturbed deciduous forests and woodland with mixed species canopy of cottonwood,
green ash, and boxelder are also widespread.
Wetlands
Wetland and aquatic communities are embedded within the forest and woodland communities including a
floodplain forest with a mixed species canopy, a wetland complex that includes a cattail marsh and a
mixed shrub dominated wetland and a willow swamp.
Threatened &Endangered Species
None found on site
Nuisance Vegetation
The site is primarily impacted by European Buckthorn which is distributed in patches with varying age
and size classes in the shrub layer of the forest and woodland communities. These included forested areas
on private property adjacent to the nature area.
