9.12 - Fire Lanes § 9.12 Section 9.12: Fire Lanes Subdivision 1. Creation of Fire Lanes The City Manager or his/her designee is hereby authorized to order the establishment of fire lanes on public or private property as may be necessary so that the travel of fire equipment will not be interfered with and that access to fire hydrants or buildings will not be obstructed. Subdivision 2. Demarcation of Fire Lanes The minimum width of any fire lane shall be no less than twenty (20) feet. All fire lanes shall be maintained in accordance with the following: A. All signs marking fire lanes shall be: 1. Constructed of at least eighteen (18) gauge steel and bear the words "No Parking - Fire Lane" in red text upon a white background; 2. Of a size not less than twelve inches by eighteen (12" by 18") inches; 3. Erected upon a steel post; 4. Located no further than one-hundred (100) feet apart in any continuous fire lane; 5. Double sided on a stationary post perpendicular to the direction of travel; 6. Located, as measured from the lowest point on the sign, seven (7) feet from grade; and 7. Located a minimum of twelve (12) inches from the curb, but not more than thirty-six (36) inches from the curb. B. Any curb or roadway adjacent to a fire lane shall be striped with yellow paint to clearly define the limits of the fire lane. C. Affected property owner(s) are responsible for erecting fire lane signs upon private property when directed by the City Manager or his/her designee. Upon an order of the City Manager or his/her designee, such owners shall erect and continually maintain fire lane signs within thirty (30) days of the first notification of the order, at their own expense. The City shall be responsible for all signs upon public right-of-way and other public property. D. The City Manager or his/her designee, at his/her discretion, may approve deviations from this Section. Golden Valley City Code Page 1 of 2 § 9.12 Subdivision 3. Parking Regulations Respecting Fire Lanes It is unlawful to park any vehicle of any description or place any material or obstruction within fifty (50) feet of the entrance to any fire station or within a designated fire lane. In the event that the City Manager or his/her designee finds a vehicle or other material unattended and/or obstructing a designated fire lane, he/she is hereby authorized to provide for removal of such vehicle or material to the nearest convenient garage or other place of safety outside the limits of the fire lane, at the expense of the owner. Subdivision 4. Enforcement The City Manager or his/her designee is authorized to issue citations for violations of this Section.
