2. New Brookview Super Bowl Opportunity
Prepared By
Rick Birno, Director of Parks and Recreation
Summary
Staff has been approached by a local marketing group that would like to rent the new Brookview
and surrounding property for up to nine days during the week of the Super Bowl hosted here in
Minneapolis. Their proposal is to host events for numerous private organizations during the week
both inside the building and outdoors on our golf course, patios and decks. These would be private
events and not open to the public.
During the initial set-up days (January 26 - January 30) the Bassett Creek Room, Wirth Lake Room,
upstairs hallway, decks and patios would be rented for load-in and event set-up. During the prep
days the Three One Six, Backyard Indoor Play Area, Parks & Recreation Guest Services Desk, Valley
Rooms (Senior Programs), winter recreation activities would all remain open and operate as
scheduled.
Beginning Wednesday, January 31
st through Sunday, February 4
th Brookview would be closed to
public and the entire facility rented out for the private events. On Monday, February 5
th, Brookview
would re-open for normal business as the marketing group removed all event amenities in the
banquet, deck and patio areas.
Brookview has an opportunity to collect significant premium event revenues for the rental of the
facility, expense for invoiced for closing the Three One Six, Backyard and Valley Rooms, percentage
of food sales, beverage sales, outdoor recreation activities, etc.
Please note that the closing of Brookview for the five days of private rental use will impact regular
facility patrons and close all of our retail operations. Though we will be reimbursed for all lost
revenues, there will be residents, programs and groups that will not be able to meet at their
regularly scheduled times for the five day period.
In addition, there will be heated tents on the patios and decks with music and activities, ice
furniture and bars outdoors on hard surface areas and snow activities on the golf course associated
with the rentals.
The marketing group is already meeting with potential clients and would like to sign a contract with
the City of Golden Valley for the use of Brookview as soon as possible.
Staff is recommending the City Council support this use of Brookview during the week of the Super
Bowl and to move forward on the development of a contract for the rental of the new Brookview
for private events during the nine days leading up to the Super Bowl.
