REGULAR MEETING MINUTES
Call to Order
The meeting was called to order at 6:34 pm by Chair Harris.
Roll Call
Commissioners present: Maurice Harris, Carrie Yeager, Jonathan Burris, Theresa Martin, Eve Clarkson,
Chris Mitchell, Kyle Scott, Gloria Peck
Commissioners absent: Lauren Barry
Staff present: Kirsten Santelices, Human Resources Director
Council present: Joanie Clausen, City Council Liaison
Approval of Agenda
MOTION by Scott to approve agenda. Seconded by Peck. Motion carried.
Approval of March Regular Meeting Minutes
Commission suggested two minor amendments to the April minutes.
MOTION by Burris to approve the April 23, 2019 regular meeting minutes as amended.
Seconded by Scott. Motion carried.
Special Presentation
Council Member Clausen provided the Commission with a history of the Human Rights Commission and
her conversation with one of the Commission’s founding members Sylvia Kaplan. Clausen shared that
Sylvia wanted to visit the Golden Valley History Museum, and suggested that she visit at the same time
the HRC members visit the museum on June 25, 2019 (June HRC meeting location). The Commission
MOTION by Burris to invite Sylvia Kaplan to the June meeting and present her with a
certificate of appreciation for her work on the Commission. Seconded by Yeager. Motion
carried.
Staff Liaison Santelices will email the official invitation to Sylvia Kaplan and create the certificate of
appreciation to present to her at the June meeting. Commissioner Martin shared that Crystal Boyd and
Don Anderson will also be in attendance of the June meeting. Council Member Clausen shared a variety
of historical documents related to the HRC, which Staff Liaison Santelices will include in the packet, and
send out to the Commissioners.
Promotional Materials Update
Staff shared the final product of the stickers that the Commission created. Staff will work with
Communications to print bookmarks, and print 200 copies of the brochures for the Pride festival. The
Commission reviewed the brochure to ensure no changes needed to be made. Commission also shared

gratitude to the Communications department for their creativity, timeliness, and the great product they
created.
Golden Valley Pride Planning
Staff registered the HRC for the event during the meeting to ensure a place was secured, and will take
care of the payment. Staff will move all of the materials and booth set-up supplies to the Police
department for Commissioners to pick up. Commissioners decided on full booth coverage, including set -
up and take-down. Commissioner Scott shared that the Pride Committee may need assistance posting
signs around time and offered up assistance to do so.
Presentation on Anti-Semitism Update
Chair Harris shared that he contacted three individuals to discuss the type of anti-Semitism event the
Commission could look at providing. Commission agreed that an exhibit is preferred due to the flexibility
and ability to reach many individuals. Chair Harris will reach out again to determine if an exhibit is
possible and report back to the Commission.
Recap New Hope HRC Event
Commissioners Harris and Scott attended the event and shared that it was successful and enjoyed
showing support to a neighbor City’s HRC.
Recap Presentation of Annual Report and Work Plan to Council
Chair Harris shared that the presentation to Council on the work plan and annual report went well. There
were a few suggestions from Council members, including that the HRC may consider doing something to
highlight the 100th Anniversary of Women’s Right to Vote. Another suggestion is to ensure that the
Commission updates Council to help promote events and activities that the Commission sponsors.
Council Member Clausen shared her appreciation and the Council’s appreciation of the great work that
the Commission is doing.
Day of Service Planning
Commission discussed options for 2019 Day of Service. Chair Harris suggested that the Commission
volunteer at PRISM again on September 11. Commissioner Martin suggested a collection of donations for
an LGBT homeless shelter. Commissioner Martin suggested that the Commission reach out to the Parks
department or another organization with the City to look at volunteer opportunities that can be opened
up to the community.
MOTION by Burris to set up collection for donations for an organization that supports homeless
youth. Motion withdrawn. Commission will discuss this further at the June meeting. The Commission is

going to research and bring suggestions for both volunteering opportunities and organizations to support
with collections.
Elections of Chair and Vice Chair
Nomination of Carrie Yeager for Vice Chair, seconded, accepted, no other nominations.
Nomination of Chris Mitchell for Chair, seconded, accepted, no other nominations.
Commissioner Yeager voted in at Vice Chair and Chris Mitchell voted in as Chair.
June Meeting Reminder
Meeting will be at the Historical Society. Commission will confirm time of the tour and the meeting.
