Call to Order
Attendance/Roll Call
The meeting was called to order by Chair Peterson at 5:30 PM. Present at the meeting were Bruce Peterson, Gloria Kumagai, Bob Hernz, Roger Johnson and Dee Ann Deaton.
Approval of Minutes
The minutes of the May 6, 2002 meeting, as revised, were approved by consensus.
Opening Comments
Chair Peterson welcomed the new commissioner, Marshall Tanick, and stated the purpose of the meeting was to review and approve the Police Officer Eligibility Register.
Police Officer Recruitment and Selection Process
Johnson reviewed the recruitment process and the previous eligibility register. He stated that there were just under 100 applications for the police officer position. Forty-eight of
those were interviewed in the first phase and twelve were interviewed in the second phase and from that twelve were chosen those who are on the current register. Peterson inquired
as to why only 3 people passed and Johnson stated that the others did not score high enough.
Kumagai inquired if there were any people of color on the list and Johnson stated that there were not. Hernz stated that there were two people of color interviewed of twelve from the
second phase.
Peterson asked if the Officer’s Eligibility Register was managed consistent with the existing approved Civil Service Commission approved process. Johnson stated that it was.
Peterson asked if there were any reservations in recommending this register for approval by the Commission. Hernz and Johnson both stated that there were none.
The December 9, 2002 Police Officer Eligibility Register was approved by consensus.
Other Business
Chair Peterson stated that the Commission extends its gratitude to Police Administration for their diligence in administering this process.
Peterson stated that the Commission would like to welcome Chief Hernz and congratulate him on his new position.
Peterson also congratulated Commissioner Kumagai on her 2002 National Distinguished Principal award, which she received in Washington, D.C. earlier in the year.
Peterson stated that he would agree to another 3-year term on the Commission and Chief Hernz stated that he will convey that to the City Council at their next meeting.
