01/29/91 Meeting Minutes GOLDEN VALLSY CIVIL SSRVICS COIIMISSION
JANUARY 29, 1991 MEE'PING
Public Safety Building, Lower Level
7800 Golden Valley Road
Golden Valley, Minnesota
The meeting was called to order by Chair Gordon Sandbaken.
Present: Chair Gordon Sandbaken, Commissioner Rosemary Thorsen,
Public Safety Director Dean Mooney, and Police Captain Roger
Johnson.
Director Mooney presented the attached listing of scores received
by officer candidates in the recent testing process.
Moved by Thorsen, seconded by Sandbaken, and carried to accept
these scores and add these candidates to our Eligibility Register
consistent with these scores and established qualifications for
police officer.
Commissioner Carol Johnson joined the meeting.
Discussion followed regarding continued efforts and frustrations
shared by staff and commission in the area of recruiting women
and minorities for service with the department. The Civil
Service Commission fully supports the affirmative action goals of
the Police Department. However, the statewide pool of qualified
applicants has so few racial minorities that local affirmative
action efforts are largely ineffective. We therefore recommend
that the City Council and the Police Department support any
programs or legislation designed to open the profession to a
larger cross section of academically qualified applicants. Staff
or commission members would make themselves available for any
questions the City Council might have.
The date for the annual meeting will be February 28, 1991 ,
at 5: 00 p.m, in the lower level of the Golden Valley Public
Safety Building.
The meeting was adjourned.
