Summary Job Descriptions of GVPD Sworn Personnel Position Summary Descriptions Chief Under direction of the City Manager, the Chief of Police is responsible for leading the full operations of the Golden Valley Police department. Among other tasks, the Chief’s primary responsibilities are to hire, train, and retain top-level sworn officers, as well as manage all administrative functions, including, but not limited to: developing and enforcing policies and procedures, budget, and communications within the department. Commander Under the general direction of the Police Chief, the Police Commander provides leadership and supervision of assigned officers and civilian personnel to ensure effective and efficient delivery of law enforcement services. Commanders will assume increased responsibilities in investigations, compliance, administrative functions, and personnel management. Sergeant The Police Sergeant provides leadership and supervision of assigned officers and civilian personnel to ensure effective and efficient delivery of law enforcement services within the context of goals and objectives outlined by the department. Sergeants will provide day-to-day supervision of patrol officers and other assigned staff, as well as prepare tactical plans, daily assignments, and necessary daily reports. Patrol Officer Under general direction of the Police Sergeants, this position is responsible, in an assigned district during a specified period of time, for the maintenance of order, enforcement of laws, apprehending criminals, preventing crime and the protection of life and property. This position also assists in the investigation of criminal offenses and accidents, regulating traffic, providing emergency services, and other related duties as required. In addition, persons in this classification may be assigned or promoted to other positions including detective. Duties, skills physical demands, responsibilities etc. remain consistent regardless of assignment. Temporary Investigator Investigator/Detective assignments are generally 24 months in duration. Investigators will investigate reported crimes, prepare, obtain, and serve search and seize warrants, interview witnesses and suspects, make arrests, and complete necessary reports.
