1. Call to Order
The meeting was called to order at 6:30pm by Cornelius.
2. Roll Call
Commissioners present: Roger Bergman, John Cornelius, Bill Delaney, Bob Mattison, Matthew
Sanders, Dawn Speltz, and Linden Weiswerda, and Brian Wright
Commissioners absent: Kelly Kuebelbeck
Staff present: Rick Birno, Parks andRecreation Director; Kimberly Sanberg, City
Council; Greg Simmons, Recreation and Facilities Supervisor; Ben Disch,
Golf Course Manager; Al Lundstrom, Park Maintenance Supervisor; and
Sheila Van Sloun, Administrative Assistant
3. Agenda Changes or Additions

4. Approval of May 24, 2021 Minutes
MOTION moved by Bergman and seconded by Mattison to approve the May 24, 2021 meeting
minutes. Motion carried unanimously.
5. Annual Review of Board – Commission Orientation Power
Birno shared the annual Commission Orientation presentation and answered questions.
6. Ash Tree Removal Update
Lundstrom shared the history of emerald ash borer in Minnesota and Golden Valley, stating the first
infestation in Golden Valley began in 2018. He shared information on the City tree removal and
replacement program since the initial infestation, noting that since 2010, the City has removed about
500 trees and replaced about the same number with everything from evergreens to shade trees.
Lundstrom said in 2020, the City received a grant to inventory and manage all trees adjacent to our
trail systems that are considered hazardous or are Ash trees.
Lundstrom said they GPS most trees allowing staff to share a map of hotspots in Golden Valley. He
noted most of the metropolitan area is infested.

Lundstrom said Brookview Golf maintenance is basically doing the same type of remove/replace
program.
7. 2022-2031 Parks CIP Review
Birno shared the Parks CIP for 2022-2031 and gave details on projects listed. After discussion,
Mattison suggested adding a sand volleyball court at another location due to demand. Speltz
suggested signs in the parks with QR codes that take you to a website with detailed information on
specific park projects throughout the city. Birno liked the idea and said he would share it with the
Communications department. No changes were recommended for the 2022-2031 Parks CIP by the
Commission.
8. 2022-2026 Golf CIP Review
Disch shared the Golf CIP for 2022-2026, which he said has been streamlined to meet the needs of
aging infrastructure. He then answered questions from the Commissioners and shared information
on the 2022 scheduled $1.8 million irrigation replacementproject.No changes were recommended
for the 2022-2026 Golf CIP by the Commission.
Wieswerda asked about the possibility of electric vehicles for golf maintenance. Disch said he would
share the idea with the golf course maintenance manager. Birno added he believed electric
maintenance vehicles and equipment would be the future and hoped Brookview Golf Course would
be a leader in this area.
9. 2022-2031 Brookview Building CIP Review
Birno shared the Brookview Building CIP for 2022-2031 and answered questions from the
Commissioners.No changes were recommended for the 2022-2031 Brookview Building CIP by the
Commission.
10. Commission and Staff Updates

-With Della Daml’s resignation, Cornelius asked the Commission to encourage all youth to
apply for the youth position now available on the Commission.
-Mattison said parking issues at Schaper Park seem to be better.
-After a recent visit to the Three One Six on a very busy evening, Speltz suggested an order
from your table system to make ordering more accessible. Birno said it was a great idea
and would share it with restaurant staff.
Addition of Bird Scooters
Birno said up to 50 scooters will be delivered to Golden Valley.
Brookview opening July 1
Birnosaid Brookview will officially open its door to the public July 1.
Backyard Update
Birnosaid the Backyard is still closed until further notice.
Arts & Music Festival Canceled for 2021
Birno said the Arts & Music Festival has beencanceled for 2021.

Public Art Display Process to Begin –Temporary Display
Birno said Brian Erickson reached outto John Kluchka, who has agreed to do a two month
temporary display until September 1.
Self-Guided Tour Location Document
Birno said he will send the tour map to the Commission tomorrow and said they can visit the
sites at their own leisure.
Kim Straw, Restaurant and Catering Manager Last Day July 2
Birno said Kim Straw, the Restaurant and Catering Manager, has resigned and is moving to
Florida. Wendy Mann has been hired as her replacement and has been shadowing Kim for
about two weeks.
GVMN Email Forward Process
Commissioners told Birno they need web-based application instructions. Birno said he would
request support from the Golden Valley IT department.
Next Meeting is scheduled for Monday, July 26, 2021
Birno reminded the Commission the next meeting is scheduled for Monday, July 26 and will
take place in-person at Brookview.
11. Adjournment
MOTION moved by Wrightand seconded by Mattison to adjourn at 8:50pm. Motion carried
unanimously.
