#072 09-15-81 Regarding Prejudice and Bigotry in the CommunityL
Resolution #72
September 15, 1981 105
Member Johnson introduced and read the following resolution and moved its
adoption:
RESOLUTION REGARDING PREJUDICE AND BIGOTRY IN THE COMMUNITY
We, the members of the Golden Valley City Council, continue to be distressed
and deeply concerned about acts of prejudice and bigotry against citizens and
property in our neighborhoods.
These acts are contrary to the values of our community and violate
religious precepts and the Constitution of the United States. We fully believe
that prejudice in any form, to any degree, and toward any individual or group,
undermines the principles of a community. Prejudice is morally wrong, and
threatening or abusing others is illegal. These acts indicate a lack of respect
for the fundamental dignity and rights of the people in our community.
Prejudice and bigotry should be eradicated from our community - lest we all
become affected.
We feel that the way to successfully combat prejudice and bigotry is for
all residents of the community to work cooperatively. The goal is possible to
achieve through joint efforts of both the private and public sectors - by
parents, educators, elected government officials, business leaders, religious
teachers, and others.
We, the members of the Golden Valley City Council, call on community leaders
to join together to eliminate prejudice in our community. And we pledge our
support and the support of the Golden Valley Human Rights Commission in these
cooperative efforts.
