85-016 - 02-05 Recognize February Black History MonthResolution 85-16 February 5, 1985 Member Stockman introduced the following resolution and moved its adoption: RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING FEBRUARY AS BLACK HISTORY MONTH IN GOLDEN VALLEY WHEREAS, Historian Carter G. Woodson founded Black History Week in 1926; and WHEREAS, in 1976 in honor of the Bicentennial, Black History Week was changed to Black History Month; and WHEREAS, the City of Golden Valley is proud to participate in the third celebration of Black History Month throughout the metropolitan area; and WHEREAS, churches, schools, corporations, businesses, community organizations and the City itself, have participated in the organizing and funding of this event; and WHEREAS, through a series of events and activities during the month of February, Golden Valley residents will have an opportunity to increase their knowledge and understanding of black people in America; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Golden Valley City Council declares February 1985, as Black History Month in Golden Valley; BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Council endorses the activities and events and encourages all residents to participate and fulfill the theme of the local Black History Month celebration, "Share the Dream." A Berson, Mayor ATTEST: C u y Na ly, Deputy City Clerk The motion for the adoption of the foregoing resolution was seconded by Member Johnson and upon a vote being taken thereon, the following voted in favor thereof: Anderson, Bakken, Johnson, Stockman and Thompson; and the following voted against the same: none, whereupon said resolution was declared duly passed and adopted, signed by the Mayor and her signature attested by the Deputy City Clerk.
