98-086 - 10-20 Establish Black History CommitteeResolution 98-86 October 20, 1998 Member introduced the following resolution and moved its adoption: RESOLUTION ESTABLISHING THE BLACK HISTORY COMMITTEE AS A HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION SUBCOMMITTEE WHEREAS, the City Council continues to encourage and support activities related to Black History; and WHEREAS, the City Council has agreed to establish the Black History Committee as a subcommittee of the Human Rights Commission; and WHEREAS, it is important to formalize this commitment; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council: • Establish the Golden Valley Black History Committee as a subcommittee of the Human Rights Commission. • One or more members of the Human Rights Commission will serve on the subcommittee. • The City would provide: 1. A secretary to take minutes for one meeting a month. 2. Funds to match dollars raised by the Committee. The Council will determine the amount during the budget process. • As volunteers come forward with a plan to develop a particular program and/or activity, they would make a proposal to the Human Rights Commission. If the Human Rights Commission agrees to the proposal, it would become a responsibility of the Black History Subcommittee. Criteria to Use to Decide: 1. Does the activity "fit" the Black History Mission? (Mission Statement Attached as Exhibit A) 2. How many volunteers are available to carry out the task? 3. Proposed budget and plan to raise funds. 4. Resolution 98-86 -Continued Exhibit A MISSION STATEMENT BLACK HISTORY MONTH COMMITTEE • To educate in an entertaining way • Goals are: October 20, 1998 1. present black history that has been eliminated from books and schools 2. to correct misconceptions of the past 3. to develop understanding and appreciation of the black culture • Ultimate goal is to create an environment where people of different races, colors, cultures, or creeds can live together in harmony; a time when the dream will be reality. • If this is accomplished in our community, we might set the model for the Nation and the world for living in peace.
