Housing BAEGV Forum
Commissioner Paradise and Commissioner Thoreson created a subcommittee to host the next
BAEGV event. The event focuses on housing in the Golden Valley community. Commissioner
Paradise presents the ideas, agenda, and logistics of the event to the Commission. She focuses on
explaining the purpose of gathering the community together and allowing residents to discuss
barriers in housing within the Community while also providing resources to Community
members.
Welcoming New Residents
Commissioner Paradise shares her ideas on welcoming new residents of Golden Valley. The idea
of creating a page on the Golden Valley website for new residents was discussed within the
Commission. She also shared ideas involving community engagement throughout Golden Valley,
highlighting several events within the Community the Commission can participate in to target
new residents. Equity and Inclusion Kiarra Zackery talks about collaborating with the PEACE
Commission to leverage the common goal of community outreach.
Land Acknowledgement Discussion
Commissioner Ruth Paradise addresses the shortened Land Acknowledgement statement used
in the Council meetings and board/commission meetings. Commissioner Ruth Paradise
proposes the following statement:
“We acknowledge and honor the Dakota Peoples, on whose ancestral land the City of
Golden Valley is built and whose land resources we use.
We reflect on the sanctioned dispossession of the Dakota peoples of their lands and
recognize the injustices done by actions taken to erase the Dakota People’s knowledge
and observance of their cultural and spiritual heritage.
We commit to counteracting this erasure by acknowledging the presence of the Dakota
people through education and by amplifying a wide range of indigenous voices.”
All Commissioners support the longer statement and consider it more impactful than the
existing statement. Equity and Inclusion Manager Kiarra Zackery needs to research what action
steps will be required to update the statement across the City.

Current Events/Community Updates
Vice Chair Ajani Woodson discusses the recent Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade.
Commissioners Melissa Johnson, Nyre Chester and Ruth Paradise consider what the commission
can do if anything. Equity and Inclusion Manager Kiarra Zackery inform the Commission that the
Commission can support women’s rights due to the City’s adoption of CEDAW and the Human
Rights Commission (now Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Commission) being listed as an
accountable partner.
