Staff Updates - School Resource Officer April 13th, 2022 – 6:30 pm Golden Valley City Hall 7800 Golden Valley Road City of Golden Valley PEACE Commission Regular Meeting April 13th, 2022 – 6:30 pm 2 Commissioner Wold asked if Robbinsdale School wants an SRO, and Golden Valley doesn’t supply one, can they partner with another police department? Councilmember Sandberg responded that she believes that to be the case, but we would have to ask Robbinsdale School District. Commissioner Crosby shared that he wants to know what the school staff believes the role of an SRO is. Commissioner Cisneros shared that there is no data to suggest that an SRO stops gun violence in school, but it does increase punitive consequences in BIPOC youth. Wold asked what PEACE Commissions role is in this process. Williams shared that staff would draft a proposal for an SRO and consult PEACE on the draft proposal. Sandberg shared that there is a potential middle ground where Golden Valley proposes a position that isn’t an SRO but fulfills those safety and restorative needs. Commissioner Frisch questioned if the officer would be a sworn officer or CSO? Frisch shared that it might be better to have a CSO because of our PD’s current staffing levels. Crosby shared that we could possibly use a security officer. Chair Gladney tasked the recruiting subcommittee with a reviewing the cities proposal for an SRO. Williams shared that GVPD has hired a new assistant police chief, Rudy Perez. Chair Gladney shared his excitement and satisfaction. Chair Gladney asked for PD staffing updates at every meeting. Chair Gladney asked if Assistant Chief White could attend a meeting and share staffing strategies with PEACE. 8. Subcommittee Workplan Breakout Wold shared that the 2023 Hiring subcommittee needs to focus on retention, training, and a national search that isn’t tainted by people attempting to sabotage Golden Valley’s search. Chair Gladney shared that the commission should think big and try and access Collaborative Solutions Grants to be more impactful. Wold shared that crime statistics have not gone up with a low number of officers and questioned the need for our previous level of staffing. Wold stated that we could possibly look at our needs and hire more services with that focus or hire more CSOs. Wold shared that the Data subcommittee’s data should provide context and direct the Hiring subcommittees goals. Wold suggested having a therapist in the PD. Wold shared that the Data subcommittee should investigate the effects of data practice policy and how that effects employment. Crosby shared that the community engagement subcommittee will continue all its tasks going into next year. Wold shared that the PD hasn’t approached the commission to collaborate on their community engagement events. Wold suggested PEACE partner with the crime prevention fund because the police department partners with them. Chair Gladney asked if we could talk with other Pohlad Grant recipients to gain perspective. Williams shared that he will invite PEACE Commissioners to meetings with partner cities. 9.
