PARK AND RECREATION COMMISSION
Village of Golden Valley
May 31, 1962 7:00 P.M.
The Park and Recreation Commission of the Village of Golden Valley met at its
regular monthly meeting at the Village Hall, Thursday, May 31, 1962, at 7:00 p.m.
Board members present: Dr. Ray G. Petersen, Chairman, Mr. Ray B. Stockman,
Mr. John H. ''ullivan, Mr. John U�. "yrnes and Mrs. Laura Scheffler. Board
members absent: Mr. Max Green and Mr. Graydon Ewald. Also present were Mr. John
L. Brenna, Director, and Miss Patricia Lynch, Secretary.
Mr. John H. Sullivan moved the April 26, 1962 minutes be approved. The
motion was seconded and carried.
Mr. Brenna then took the floor to explain the Summer Program.
Swim Instruction -extended one hour. There are 4, two week sessions, to be
held at Twin Lake Beach. A $3.00 charge is made to cover transportation cost.
There also has been a 5¢ charge added by the owner of the beach. Registration
will be June 9, at the Village Hall.
Arts & Crafts -on a round robin basis to each park.
Teenage Dances -to be held at Lillian Seeman Park and will be chaparoned by
members of the Golden Valley Jaycees and the Golden Valley Park and Recreation
Department.
Knothole Baseball -Registration June 11. There will be cards sent out to those
who failed to make Little League, Babe Ruth or Minor League. The first weeks
will be spent in getting the boys organized. Two games a week will be played.
Golf -Instruction will again be given at the Golden,`alley, -C61intryrt:Club at
T0¢ per lesson or $3.00 for 6 weeks.
Puppetry- on a round robin basis, no charge.will be made. It is done in
cooperation with the Suburban Recreation Association.
Baton & Acrobatics -also round robin basis, no charge.
Tennis -4 sessions of two seek each, set up according to age. Tennis league will
be set up with games on a round robin basis. Registration is made by filling out
and sending in the form on the tear sheet.
Scrim Team -Westbrook Country Club Pool is unavailable. A place is needed so
practice can commence when school closes and continue to August 31.
Sammer Playgrounds -Registration is June 18 at 9:00 a.m. on the playgrounds,
Noble, Papoose, Golden Oaks, Lions Club, Lillian Seeman, Golden Valley high
School and Glenview Terrace.
Day Camp-Registrationiis made by mailing in the form on the tear sheet.
A $3.00 charge is made for th`.e ntire week. Nature trails and canoeing are
an example of some of the activities.
Senior Citizens -Meetings are held the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of each month. The
group now numbers around 30. their activities consist of such things as cards
guest lecturers and tours. This activity is in conjunction with the liuburban
Recreation Association.
The Brochures go out to the schools on Friday, the following Thursday there
will be an article in the paper followed by a Village wide newsletter.
There will be two maintenance crews with one full-time man in each crew.
Softball -4 teams of fast pitch and 6 teams in slow pitch ahve been organized to
date.
PARKS
Work has been stymied with the prevelence of wet weather. Leveling work
cannot be completed until the ground dries.
A piece of land on North Meadow Lane, not quite as large as Golden Oaks
Park has been leveled, seeding will follow in the not too distant future.
A shipment of trees made up of Green Ash, Cedars, Mountain Ash, Russian
Olives, Maple, Blace Walnut, White Pine, blue Spruce and Jack Pine, have been
planted at Lions Club Park and the lost next to the Village Hall. These will
be moved this fall to our nursery location.
Mr. Brenna stated a new man had been hired for Park Maintenancep His name
is Lloyd Roepke, he is from New Alum, Minnesota.
&AND LAKEVIEW HEIGHTS
Mr. Brenna explained the new location is relation to its surrounding area.
Letters have been sent to the owners asking their opinion regarding donations.
Dr. Petersen asked about the Bond money and questioned if it was not
being spent too slowly. It was the general concensus that it was not owing to
the thought that the parks were still inthe filling stage..
OVERPASS TO SCHEIDS PARK
It was felt there should be sane access made to the park from the North
before it is too latep This being done by means of a tunnel or traffic lights.
John Sullivan made a motion that a letter requesting an investigation by the
council, if necessary with aid of the State Highway Department., for construction '
of a tunnel under County Highway 66 to give access to Scheid's Park from the North.
John Byrnes seconded the motion. Motion carried.
SWIM POOL
The open discussion meetings with main emphasis of discussion centered on
location and type have been held. They plan to invite people who have worked
with pools and have gathered reports for study. The survey will be sent out
by June 6th with the covering letter.
Mr. Brenna stated that Kenneth Larkin had been invited by the committee to
speak at their meeting. Theyw were very enlightened by him. They have also
decided to take trips to the various possible sites for a pool..
AWARD
Mr. Brenna explained the National Recreation Association each year awards
to persons who have done outstanding work in the field of Recreation. lir. Ray B.
Stockman was selected to receive this award. He will officially receive the award
at the June 6th Council Meeting.
Mr. Stockman expressed his thanks and appreciation and stated he accepted
the award on behalf of many who have striven for the advancement of Parks and
Recreation in Golden Valley.
