PARK AND RECREATION COMMISSION OF
Village of Golden Valley
September 24, 1962 7:15 P.M.
The Park and Recreation Commission of the Village of Golden Valley met at
its regular monthly meeting at the Village Hall, Monday, September 24, 1962
at 7:15 P.M. Board members present: Dr. Ray G. Petersen, Chairman,
Ray B. Stockman, John W. Byrnes, John W. Sullivan, Mrs. Laura Scheffler,
and Max Green. Board Member absent: Graydon Ewald. Also present were
John L. Brenna, Director, and Joan Wallin, Secretary.
The meeting was called to order at 7:15 P.M. by Chairman Petersen. He then
called for the approval of the minutes from the August 30, 1962 meeting. The
minutes were approved as written.
Mr. Brenna told that the 1963 Budget was accepted. He compared the 1962 and
1963 Budgets, pointing out an $8,000 increase from last year, and if the
re-evaluation goes through, vle'd receive a percentage increase.
A look at the plans for fall and winter brought a few changes in Football,
with eight -man teams, allowing more boys to participate; in Basketball,
dividing into smaller age groups, and playing closer to home; in Hoy,
closer age level.
Mrs. Laura Scheffler brought to attention the confusion in the name of
"Harold" and "Lions Club" Park. This will be looked into, and one name
used in the future.
Skating - A new snow blower to get rid of the snow on the rinks faster.
Possibility of skating rinks at three additional areas.
Senior Citizens - Planning a dance for October 3rd and inviting seven other
suburbs. Enthuastic group meets twice a month. •
Skiing - Skiing instructions at Meadowbrook School with two instructors
Cusses Saturdays and one or two evenings a week. Open for youngsters and
adults. Fees will pay the expenses.
Swim Team - Lincoln Jr. High has been scheduled instead of Jordan Jr. High.
New Hope pool and other suburbs are all interested in using the pool, so a
meeting of all concerned will take place to see what can be done.
Teen Dances - Held again 'at Noble School one Friday night a month. Possibility
of using the High School and getting a local group to play for special
occasions.
Men's Basketball and volleyball - Free play - just to get a good work-out.
Women's Volleyball - Free play, but gets into competition as season goes on.
Men's Leagues - Companies and independents will form league competition.
Women's Exercises - New activity we will try. Chance for women to learn
new exercises to continue at home, and time for them to exercise together
to music for fun and relaxation.
Swim Instruction - Jordan Jr. High has been scheduled. Two activity
programs' are planned. One from now til Christmas, and the second
starting after Christmas going til Spring. Suburban Recreation
Association pays the rent and instructors.
Synchronized Swimming - To be held at Glenwood Hills Hospital with
Joan Stacy instructor. Two sessions will be scheduled with a show
at the climax of the season.
Adult Dance - Instruction to be held at Meadowbrook School Fees
pay the !instructors.
Adult Swim - Instructions will be at Glenwood Bills Hospital.
All Adult activities are all self-sustaining. Other activities will
be added' as needed. "._
Mr. Brenna then brought the attention to Park Development telling about
the prices of seeding and fertilizer. Dick Ulrick, park foreman, took
samples of the soil to the University for testing, so as to see what
the soil needs. Figure about $100 for lime and $500 for seed ( a
Standard Park mixture). Total acreage on four areas is sixteen acres.
This Saturday the trees will be transferred.
A small neighborhood park in the S. Tyrol area is being offered by the
McCarthy Estate for $6,000, plus three years ofback taxes.
Mr. Green suggested getting the general terrain ready on the parks and
some basic equipment, such as backstops, and indigenous playground •
equipment and then approach the people that more money is needed to
equip the park any more - such as shelters, and hard surface areas.
Parks should be equipped equally.
It was brought up that the $3,000 for Natchez Park is almost gone.
Mr. Brenna told that the Swimming Pool survey is completed, and the
forty-two page survey will be available at the next meeting.
The Suburban Recreation Association annual picnic is on the Thursdav of
next month on which we normally meet, so we'll meet on the fourth Monday
which is October 22nd. i
Mr. Stockman suggested more pictures be taken to show the community the
interest in recreation.
With no further business, Mr. Sullivan moved the meeting be adjourned,
and Mr. Green seconded the motion. The meeting adjourned at 8:30 P.m.
