January 25,1968
A regular meeting of the Golden Valley Park & Recreation Commission
was held Thursday, January 25,1968, at 7:00 p.m. at the Public
Safety Building, 7800 Golden Valley Road, Golden Valley, Minnesota.
Chairman Roelke presided and the following members were present:
Anderson, Byrnes, Brown, Sullivan, Oukrop, Petersen, Neuman, Reed,
Fischer, Forster, Kahn, Tart. Member absent: Ron Hammer. Also
present: Director John Brenna, Secretary Phyllis Jordahl.'
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
MOVED by Kahn, seconded by Petersen, unanimously carried to approve
the minutes of December 28,1967, as mailed.
ELECTION OF OFFICERS
Chairman Roelke asked for nominations from the floor for Chairman
and Vice Chairman for the Park & Recreation Commission for the5ear
1968. Stan Anderson was unanimsouly voted in for Chairman. A vote
was cast for the vacancy of Vice -Chairman between Ron Hammer and Dave
Kahn. Dave Kahn is the new Vice -Chairman. Election of Officers for
the sub -committees will take place at our next regular meeting. At
This point the meeting was turned over to Stan Anderson.
SCHEID PARK BRIDGE
Mr. Brenna told members present that tomorrow at 2:30, he and the
Chairman and Vice -Chairman of the Commission will meet with Hennepin
County Officials for further negotiations on the Scheid Park Bridge.
The Golden Valley Village Council has given the Park & Recreation
the go-ahead to negotiate with the County and report back to them.
TRACTOR -LOADER BID
Bids were opened on Friday, January 12,1968, for the furnishing of
one new 1968 Model Tractor Loader. Bids were as follows:
Hall Equip. Inc. International Harvester Model 3514 $6649.39
International Harvester Co - Model 3514 6623.00
Allis Chalmers* Model I-600 5395.00
*did not meet specifications
The Park & Recreation Dept. recommended that we readvertise for the
tractor loader; the reason being, two bidders were above our budget
and one did not meet specifications.
SNOW MOBILES
Much discussion ensued concerning the snow mobiles using the Village
parks. MOVED by Kahn, seconded by Sullivan, unanimously carried, to
recommend that we enforce our present Ordinance No. 140.02 (1) with
respect to motor vehicles in our parks and that we try to provide an
open area for snow mobiles for those interested in the near future.

All those serving on the Commission at the present time, whose terms
expire, asked for re -appointment. These included: John Sullivan,
Dan Oukrop, Tom Tart, Ron Hammer. Moved by Kahn, seconded by Tart,
unanimously carried to approve the adoption of the nominating committee
repot .
SUB -COMMITTEE REPORTS
Tom Tart reminded all members that the Miracle Equipment Co., of
Grinnell, Iowa, has invited all interested members to come down and
visit their factory faciltiies to acquaint them with the playground
equipment that they have available. The week of January 30th is the
week specified for this tour. Mr. Brenna asked that any member
interested, should call his office.
SWIM POOL REPORT
Glen Reed gave a report on the swimming pool facilities at Brookview.
The Swimming Coach from the University of Minnesota and Mr. Reed
went over to Brookview and carefully looked over the present facilities.
They brought forth several recommendations.
1. Never use the showering facilities inside the main Brookview
building.
2. Pool is sufficient fnr instruction
3. Deck space is more than adequate
4. Best use of the pool with three teaching stations:
Beginners in the shallow end, intermediates in the middle, Diving
or Life Saving Classes in the deep end of the pool.
5• Lockers may be changed to baskets, the shower and toilet facilities
should be reversed, but can get along with a directed educational
program.

6. Use north end of building for main entrance.
7. Use north end of parking lot for swimming only.
BROOKVIEW
In fulfilling part of our purchase agreement with Brookview, we now
have a full time employee at Brookview. His duties are to work with
their crews and keep tap as to normal maintenance requirements.
BROOKVIEW PARK
The preliminary detailed drawings from Brauer and Associates will be
ready about mid-February.
JOURNALS & MAGAZINES
The official publication of the National Recreation & Park Association's
"Parks & Recreation" will be sent to all members. The Park sub-
committee will also receive the Park Maintenance Journal and the
Brookview Sub -committee will receive the U.S.G.A. Journal.
VILLAGE OF PLYMOUTH
The Park Commission Chairman from Plymouth Village has invited our
Commission to a joint meeting on February 8th at 7:30 p.m. Those
interested, please call Mr. Brenna.
BROOKVIEW SUB -COMMITTEE
Monday, January 29th at 7:30 p.m. Mr. Harry Cooper, the Edina Golf
Professional will meet with the Brookview Sub -committee. All members
interested should attend.

The first step in advancing our Federal application for the Land &
Water Conservation Fund Act has passed the Hennepin County Review
Board. The next step before it reaches the Stere level will be that
of a newly created Metro Council.
