GOLDEN VALLEY PARK AND RECREATION COMMISSION
July 20, 1972
A regular meeting of the Golden Valley Park and Recreation Commission
was held at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 20, 1972 at the Brookview
Municipal Community Center, 8200 Wayzata Boulevard, Golden Valley,
Minnesota.
Chairman Brown presided and the following members were present:
Burmeister, Hammer, Jerje, Petersen and Kelby. Members absent:
Gergen, Durda, Thrall. Also present: James Zimdars, intern; John
L. Brenna, Park and Recreation Director.
MINUTES
MOVED by Herje, seconded by Hammer to approve the minutes of the
regular meeting of May 25, 1972 as mailed. Carried.
MR. UON RAUTIO - SIGURD OLSON SCHOOL
Mr. Don Rautio, the Instructional Assistant at Sigurd Olson Elementary
School, showed a schematic drawing of their outdoor environmental
plan, which includes pathways, nature center and walk bridge
that extends around their school complex.
Mr. Raution thanked the Park and Recreation Commission for their help
in constructing the pathway.
At this time, Mr. Rautio asked the Park and Recreation Commission if
they would help control the mini -bike problem that apparently eminates
from our park which is adjacent to their property. Mr. Rautio stated
that the mini -bikes would ruin the natural pathways if uncontrolled.
At this time, Mr. Brenna stated that all Village parks are out of
bounds to all motorized vehicles, and he would so inform our police
department of the problem.
Mr. Rautio also stated that when we start development Wildwood Park,
the school would like to work with us on the possible extension of
the nature path.
At this time Mr. Brown thanked Mr. Rautio for his fine presentation
and stated tAat the Park and Recreation Commission will discuss the
above matter and let him know of our decision.
GLENVIEW TERRACE PARK
At this time, residents from the Glenview Terrace Park area appeared
and discussed with the Park and Recreation Commission the development
of Glenview Terrace Park.

After considerable discussion, it was the consensus of residents
present, that they would like the proposed backstop not installed.
It was also the consensus, that the Park and Recreation Commission
consider leaving the present play equipment where it is, on the
west side of Zenith Avenue, and if any new equipment is purchased,
it too be installed on the west side of Zenith Avenue.
Residents present also expressed a desire for additional lighting
and tennis courts.
At this time, Mr. Brown, Chairman of the Park and Recreation Commission,
asked Commission members for their input. After little discussion,
it was MOVED by Herje and seconded by Burmeister, that we exclude the
backstop from the ball diamond area.

At this time, Mr. Brown stated that Mr. Brenna received a letter from
our sanitarian relative to excessive dog droppings in Village Parks.
It was the sanitarian's recommendation that we ban dogs from all
Village parks.
After much discussion by all members present, it was MOVED by Kelby,
and seconded by Hammer to refer the problem to the Village staff,
so they could initiate an educational campaign through the Sun
newspaper, signs and the Village Bulletin informing Village residents
of the problem.
JAMES ZIMDARS - SUMMER INTERN
At this time, Mr. Brenna introduced Mr. James Zimdars to the Commission.
Mr. Brenna stated that Mr. Zimdars is working for the department through
the Urban Corp. Mr. Zimdars is working fn all segments of the Park and
Recreation Department. He will be a sophmore at the University of Minn.
in Morris and is majoring in sociology.
GOLF PATRON CARD - VILLAGE EMPLOYEES
At this time, Mrs. Chris Jackson and Mrs. Ann Thornton, representing the
Brookview Women's Golf Association, asked the Park and Recreation
Commission about the golf patron card and how it applies to Village
employees who are not residents of Golden Valley. Mr. Brenna stated
that the Village Council extended the patron privilege to all Golden
Valley employees who live out of the Village in March, 1969.
Mrs. Jackson stated that they were not aware of the Council's action,
and it now is clear.

PARK COMPLETION PLANS
At this time, members present discussed a time table relative to a
park bond issue. After much discussion, it was MOVED by Herje and
seconded by Petersen, that we, recommend to the Village Council that
Tuesday, October 3rd be established as the election date. Carried.
Chairman Brown asked Mr. Brenna to bring forth the recommendation at
the July 3rd Council meeting.
Discussion also insued relative to the neighborhood meeting time-
table. It was decided that the neighborhood meetings would take
place on the 18, 19, 200 24, and 25 of July.
At this time, Chairman Brown asked Mr. Brenna about the graphics
he would like used at the neighborhood meetings. Mr. Brenna stated
that he would need a rendering of each park, showing that which has
been done, and that which we intend to do, plus a 35mm, slide of
each rendering for a slide presentation.
Chairman Brown asked Mr. Brenna to approach the Village Council at
their July 3rd meeting and ask for an appropriation for the above.
It was also the consensus of Commission members present that the
dollar amount for the bond issue be readty for the August 7th Council
meeting.
JULY MEETING DATE
The next meeting of the Park and Recreation Commission will be held
at 7:30 p.m. on MONDAY, JULY 10TH at the Brookview Community Center.
ADJOURNMENT
There being no further business, it was MOVED by Herje, and seconded
by Hammer, that we adjourn the meeting at 12:30 a.m. Carried.
