GOLDEN VALLEY PARK AND RECREATION COMMISSION
August 29, 1974
A regular meeting of the Golden Valley Park and Recreation Commission was held
on Thursday, August 29, 1974, at 7:30 p.m. at the Brookview Community Center,
8200 Wayzata Blvd., Golden Valley, Minnesota.
Chairman Gergen presided, and the following members were present: Brown,
Duebner, Jaffe, Kelby and Petersen; members absent, Hammer and Jackson. Also
present were John L. Brenna, Director of Parks and Recreation, and Gertrude
Peterson, secretary.
MINUTES
It was moved by Petersen and seconded by Brown, that the minutes of the meeting
of July 25, 1974 be approved. Motion carried.
NEW BUSINESS
Chairman Gergen read a letter from Mr. and Mrs. Duane Carlson of 2000 Valders
Avenue, Golden Valley, relative to their son and another boy becoming lost at
the Como Excursion during the summer playground program. After a discussion
of the incident, the Chairman was instructed to write Mr. and Mrs. Carlson a
letter outlining policies and precautions taken to protect the children.
Chairman Gergen read a letter from Mr. Floyd Pearson of 8115 Plymouth Avenue
North, Golden Valley, relative to Golden Oaks Park. Mr. Brenna explained the
difficulties and problems we have had with this park relative to vandalism.
After a lengthy discussion, it was the decision of the members present that
the Chairman should write a letter to Mr. Pearson responding to the six points
outlined in his letter, and requesting cooperation from the neighbors in the
area in preventing vandalism which continually presents itself.
PARK CONSTRUCTION
Mr. Brenna briefed the Commission on construction in the parks relative to
walkways, parking areas, tennis courts, walkway lights, and the planters
around the shelter buildings.
TRAILS
Mr. Brenna discussed the various problems that have arisen and stated that
more time will be needed for construction than planned.
RESIGNATION — Dr. Thomas L. Jackson
Chairman Gergen read a letter from Dr. Thomas L. Jackson, stating that due
to the fact that he would be at the University of Illinois for the coming
year, it was necessary for him to resign from the Commission. A letter
of appreciation for his services on the Commission will be sent to Dr.
Jackson.

OPEN SPACE COMMITTEE
Dr. Petersen briefed the Commission on the acticity of the Open Space
Committee to date. Ernest money has been paid on the Star of Bethlehem
property, and the Brunswick lots are in negotiation; also a master map
is being prepared for the City use. There were five applications for
membership on the Open Space Committee. All five applicants were inter—
viewed, and the Open Space Committee recommends that the following persons
be appointed to the Open Space Committee: Syrile Ellison, Virginia Levy,
Paul St. Marie, Mary Bowman, Robert Englud, Rosalyn Anderson, Craig Huseby,
Earl Jorgenson, and Roma Witzig. The following are the current liasion
members, having been appointed by their respective commission or
committee: Raymond Petersen, Park and Recreation Commission; (G. Burton
Brown, alternate), Robert Brose, Environmental Commission; Kathryn
Hakala, Planning Commission; and Rosemary Thorsen, Trail Committee.
It was then moved by Brown, and seconded by Duebner, that the Park and
Recreation Commission recommend to the City Council the appointments of
proposed members for the Open Space Committee. Motion carried.
Mr. Gergen reported to the Commission the findings of the Commitee seeking
a new dump site. The committee had discussed the following areas: a
ponding area on Douglas Drive, the Northern States Power Company property
on 10th Avenue North, Industrical Park area,in the western portion of
Golden Valley, and an area at Plymouth and Boone.

There being no further business, it was moved by Petersen and seconded
by Brown, that the meeting be adjourned. Meeting was adjourned at
10:30 p.m.
