Members present: Liz Elder, Rich Krahulec, Linda Loomis, Roger McConico, Tom Zins, Jim
Vaughan. Also present were Rick Jacobson, Gloria Odegaard and Al Lundstrom — City Forester.
ADDITIONS
Add the Forestry Report to the agenda, and under "Old Business", add Brunswick/Dakota
Buffer.
MINUTES — October 26, 1998
A motion was made by Roger McConico and seconded by Tom Zins to approve the minutes of
October 26, 1998. Motion carried.
FORESTRY REPORT — AL LUNDSTROM
Al Lundstrom passed out and reviewed the 1998 Forestry Program Report. During 1998, 51 trees
were removed due to Dutch Elm disease and five trees tested positive for Oak Wilt disease. One
hundred seventy-three boulevard and park trees were trimmed. One hundred and three trees were
planted — 47 in parks and the remaining number in association with the Pavement Management
Program.
Arbor Day was celebrated at Bassett Creek Park. Fifteen students participated who are working
with the Hennepin Conservation District on monitoring and learning about the Bassett Creek
watershed issues.
Several other issues were highlighted by Al and he answered questions.
GOLF/SWIM EXCHANGE
Rick Jacobson went through the figures comparing the use of Brookview Golf Course and the St.
Louis Park pool, which had been included with, last month's minutes. He had not heard any
negative comments from golfers.
Tom Zins moved to continue the program, and Rich Krahulec seconded it. Motion carried
unanimously.
SKATE PARK
Maple Grove, St. Louis Park, and Golden Valley had the best results with the portable skate park
during the summer of 1998.
The company who put it together (TruRide) had another meeting and is reconsidering whether or
not to do it again next year. The next meeting will be January 6, 1999.
Golden Valley will check with the insurance people to see whether or not an additional charge is
necessary. Last year it had to be a separate policy.
OLD BUSINESS
Brunswick/Dakota Buffer
Linda Loomis called several times and left messages to set up a meeting, but her calls have not
been returned. She will continue trying to set up a meeting with representatives from the
neighborhood.
Alternate Task Force Member for Xenia Ave. Project
An alternate delegate is requested in case the regular person can't make a meeting. Roger
McConico agreed to serve as needed.
Honeywell
Rick Jacobson gave a brief update regarding information received back from the company hired
by the City to explore soil conditions and pollution at the Honeywell baseball field site. More
information will be available at the next meeting.
NEW BUSINESS
Golden Valley City Council received a request from some senior walkers in the northwest corner
of Golden Valley to plow trails in the winter in the General Mills Research area. Discussion
followed. No recommendation came forth from the Commission.
There will not be a December meeting. The next meeting will be Monday, January 25, 1999.
