REGULAR MEETING MINUTES
Call to Order
Kiarra Zackery called the meeting to order at 6:43 pm. Equity and Inclusion Manager introduced a new DEI
Commissioner, Jonathan Kim.
Roll Call
Commissioners present: Joelle Allen, Ajani Woodson, Ruth Paradise, Melissa Johnson, Sheri Hixon,
Jonathan Kim
Commissioners absent: Teresa Sit, Chris Mitchell, Thomas Huling,
Staff present: Kiarra Zackery, Equity and Inclusion Manager, Maurice Harris, Council Liaison
Approval of August 24 Agenda and July 27 Meeting Minutes
MOTION by Commissioner Johnson to approve agenda and minutes. Seconded by Commissioner Allen.
Motioned carried.
New Business
A. Chair and Vice Chair votes and appointment
Members of the commission agreed to postpone the conversation for electing a Chair and
Vice-Chair for the Commission. This was agreed since 3 members of the commission were
not present.
MOTION by Commissioner Johnson to postpone Chair and Vice Chair votes. Seconded by
Commissioner Allen. Motioned carried.
B. Quarter 4 Building an Equitable Golden Valley Planning
The discussion led to members brainstorming on topics for Quarter 4, Building and Equitable
Golden Valley. Members introduced the idea of planning the event to discuss land
acknowledgement and Indigenous people. Members also addressed the timeline on the next
BAEGV event and the need to fully research land acknowledgement before organizing the event.
Commissioner Kim, Commissioner Hixon, and Commissioner Paradise created a subcommittee to
study the topic for a future BAEGV event. The commission agreed for this quarter, they will focus
on Equity in the Future, an introduction to equity in the community.

C. Work Plan Development
Commissioners agreed they will continue organizing the MLK Essay Contest the Human Rights
Commission had previously hosted. They also agreed they will continue to develop topics and
conversations for Building an Equitable Golden Valley.

MOTION by Commissioner Hixon and seconded by Commissioner Woodson to adjourn at 7:58pm.
